Whatever you call him, he is a very special musician. The CA native (born Stephen Johnson) lived on the notorious Normandie ave in South Central Los Angeles and moved frequently to various So-Cal hoods due to persistent financial struggles. His family had experienced homelessness several times staying at shelters like the Salvation Army. Those experiences led to his family being featured on a nationally aired special on homelessness in America.
At the age of 10, Stephy’s father moved the family to his own hometown of Seattle WA with hopes of a new start. For the next couple years things would begin to go right for the first time as a family. Then in 2001, it all came to an abrupt halt when Stephy Jey’s father died unexpectedly from a rare prostate complication. The loss of the father figure a month before his 13th birthday was the hardest thing the young rapper-to-be ever had to endure and it opened the door to depression, anxiety and self esteem issues.
Stephy struggled to find ways to express himself until he ended up at an inter-urban private school called SUA. There, at age 16, he took an arts core class he didn’t want to take and discovered hip hop accidently. Stephy Jey had played in a classical and jazz band, but didn’t know anything about hip hop. He grew up in a faith based household that never listened to hip hop so when he had an assignment to write a rap verse, he didn’t think much of it. The response to the rap in class was so outrageously positive and unexpected that Stephy didn’t know how to respond! He started joining in on the class freestyle sessions and toppin everyone in the class with rhymes off the top. His freestyle skills soon gained him respect throughout the school which was something he never had coming up as a misfit.
This discovery of the art of emceeing became Stephen’s burning passion and obsession. He identified 2 other young spitters (1 Hunnid & Sway Skill) and formed a group called 3d. With no money to record anything and no money for beats, Stephy was proactive and started making beats for his new crew. He would also win $100 in a freestyle battle defeating renowned Seattle based freestyle champ “Language Arts” (much respect). The trio would go on to release 1 album in 2007, get the attention of ARs from record labels like universal records, and members of the group would eventually open up for names like Common and Twista to name a few.
Now Stephy Jey is the founder and CEO of Truism Productions and is also working on several endeavors. He continually delivers an unparalleled standard of excellence to the music industry. This is evident with his latest project and first solo mixtape “Tidal Wave” set to release June 30th 2011. It combines witty lyricism and mind bending word play with rock solid hooks and a flow spectacular.
The sky is not the limit for Stephy Jey, but rather the starting point and his future in music is certainly one that will serve the planet a new brand of dope. He aspires to travel the globe delivering a life changing message of life and hope through the medium of awesome artwork.
