Shaggy's music is a playful reggae-fusion; he uses reggae, rap, ragga, dance-hall, melody, whatever works, working with diverse other artists to create a sound that is unique to him. This isn't gangster rap, or about violence against women - or men; it celebrates life - sensuality, sexuality, love, and gratitude for life with the strut of a "player" ("It wasn't me") sometimes prevalent, and the sincere gratitude of someone who started out with very little singing about his mother and how hard she worked, and how "you can never give up" if you want to get anywhere in "Hope."
Hot Shot, his fifth studio album, sold over 20 million copies worldwide, six million in the US. For this writer, Hot Shot is the emblematic Shaggy album; the different elements of his music coalesce into a whole that works, and is always enjoyable, whether to listen or dance. The tracks range from bawdy but fun (It Wasn't Me, Freaky Girl), to sincere gratitude (Angel, Hope, Keep'n it Real).
