On February 19 1990 Sasha Merci Medina was born in Montefiore Hospital located in the bronx. Her mothers name was Mildercia Medina, who died three months after giving birth due to breast cancer. STiiX first memories were with her grand parents in Dominican Republic where she was later taken to live the early years of her life. Since the age of three this young talent already knew what she aspired to be. Sasha loved to sing along to Selena’s music and pretend she was on stage. She would sit her family down and give them a show, her show. Whenever she was alone she would try to be as creative as she could and make her own songs. At the age of five Stiix came to New York City for a vacation that became her nightmare. Her grandmother got sick and passed away a year later. Sasha then became more in tune with her artistic gift, which is writing and also singing. She wrote her first song in the fourth grade behind the school during recess. The first song she ever wrote was for a friend that was trying to make a song. It was about being unconditionally in love with someone. When she wrote that song for her friend they craved for more. One day one of her classmate let the glee club teacher know that Sasha could sing. Mr. Caldwell caught her singing in the hallway one day. He then stopped her and asked he if she wanted to be part of the glee club, she was scared to joined. Even though he was the first person to show her how to embrace true talent, this young girl was still filled with doubt. No matter how she felt inside her love affair with performing became strong. Since then, whenever she could perform she did. After elementary school she didn’t think she was ever going to perform again. Middle school was tough, she was being picked on for being different and all she would do was question herself. Was she good enough? Will she ever perform again? If so who would care? She was an outsider and that’s all she knew and felt. Until one day she sat behind the classroom like she usually did, but that day was different. The girls that used to pick on her sat next to her. Stiix didn’t talk much to anyone so she sang to herself. The leader of these mean girls heard her sing. Stiix says all she remembers her saying is “Yo Sasha can sing.” They then made her sing all of their favorite song. Music became her escape, and weapon for being different. Stiix explained “The only way I was able to get close to my crush was by singing to him.” Stiix then went on performing and doing off Broadway shows. Sasha then focused more on her art more then her social life. One of the major names they called her was Stiix, that later became her stage name. People didn’t understand how she can take a name like that and turn it into a positive. “Stiix was just a word used to hurt my feeling, but what people don’t understand is you change negative to a positive. Now when they think of calling someone else Stiix they think of me.” She said when a smile. “ Like they say what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger”. In high school she didn’t miss any performances, but she tried something new… Rapping. “Rapping helps me express myself a lot more detailed then sing, even though I love singing its my passion.” Even though Stiix may have a bad attitude like she doesn’t care about anything, and doesn’t need a man in her life. Sasha is the opposite, she is the one that cares and a sucker for love. “These two characters are me, sometimes I feel as if im spilt in two”. Stiix music is very personal she also believes that if you are more in tune with yourself it is easier to connect with other. Her music comes from an honest place. We asked Stiix which were the artist she looked up too, she said everyone. Those who stood out to her were Selena, Janice Joplin, Lauren Hill, santigold, Amy Winehouse, and Salt & Pepper. “Its funny because I feel like in my music its noticed that I have mix of all these styles.” Stiix is most inspired when listening to music in her room, where she can write her thoughts on paper. What inspires her the most are her own life events, and others.
