The band was born when Smith and his girlfriend broke up in early 2008. Smith shared a lease and was forced to sleep on his friend's couch for most of the spring. During that time, Smith wrote several songs that would comprise the Aye-Ayes' early work. The band played their debut show at the famous Living Room venue in New York's Lower East Side in July 2008 with Smith's friend Jim Bisbee on the bass. They created a full-length album over the course of the fall of 2008 which was officially released in the summer of 2009. It is available for free download from www.theayeayes.com.
The band continues to gig around the Lower East Side and East Village scene where it has found a small but passionate following. Citing influences from The Replacements to Weezer to the Talking Heads, the band's diverse sound is anchored by Smith's witty but passionate songwriting. The band is working on a follow-up album, due late in 2010.
