They are known for their aggressive live recreations of obscure mid-60s garage, psychedelia and protopunk, using vintage gear of the era (e.g. KAPA, Mosrite, Rickenbacker and Fender guitars, Fender and Ampeg amps, Big Muff fuzzes, Morley wahs, and coiled guitar cables).
Much of the band's inspiration comes from Tobacco A-Go-Go, a 3-volume Nuggets-like compilation of extinct North Carolina garage rock bands from the 1960s curated by drummer Ken Friedman.
History
Formed in the spring of in 2009 as an offshoot of Chapel Hill's Amps Do Furnish A Room collective, Thee Dirtybeats' original lineup consisted of Andras Fekete and Pete Gamble on guitars, Jamie McLendon on bass, and Ken Friedman on drums, with Fekete and McLendon sharing lead vocals. Initially a side project, the group played sporadic gigs at popular local music venues, most notably The Cave and Local 506.
In the spring of 2010, Gamble left to focus on his other band Killer Filler. Thee Dirtybeats reformed later in 2010, with McLendon moving from bass to join Fekete on guitar, and with Friedman and new bassist Andrew Meadors contributing additional vocals.
Re-energized, the group began playing clubs with increasing momentum, headlining well-received garage rock shows at Motorco, Casbah, Local 506, The Pinhook, Duke Coffeehouse, Sadlacks and Slims, as well as radio appearances on WXDU and WXYC. This exposure culminated in a headlining spot at Cat's Cradle, where the band closed the 2011 Carrboro Music Festival. Over 180 bands played.
During this streak, the band recorded its debut ep thee dirtybeats in a marathon session at Spacelab Recording in Durham NC with engineer Chris Rossi, with mastering by Tim Carless at Mockin' Bird Recording Co of Chapel Hill NC. The ep features a hidden track, an extended psychedelic workout that traditionally closes the band's live set.
In October 2011, after the Cradle show and ep's release, Fekete left the band to move to DC. He was replaced in 2012 by Raleigh area guitarist / vocalist Andrew Snee.
