The Tulsa native spends much of his time during the year in Dallas attending Dallas Baptist University and studying music business. However, he can’t forget his roots and the loyal following that he has developed in his hometown. The road of life that Ty has traveled between Dallas and Tulsa has given him much of the inspiration for his debut album, GIVE ME A SECOND.
Much of the album’s subject matter aims to be, in Ty’s words, “relatable, while dealing with love, heartbreak, having a great time, and breaking free, just to name a few.” The title of one of the most popular tracks, 19 to 2, featured in Hollister’s Summer 2011 playlist, baffles some. “It deals with that moment when you’re talking to someone you really like and you feel like you’re only two years old because you lost your ability to speak,” the now 20 year old writer says. “Speaking on that note, I could see my song, Stumble Upon You, as a situation straight out of a romantic comedy,” Mayfield adds.
“Coming up with a title for this album was kind of spontaneous,” says Ty. “You have to start with the title track, Give Me A Second. Every one always thinks it’s a love song…it’s not! I was thinking about my fans and wanted a song that everyone could have fun with.” By the way, Ty loves the ‘Oh Hey, Hey’ part of the song. “I have fun when my fans do,” the artist adds. “If you put things in context, the album basically takes life and puts it on a disc. And since life is too serious most of the time, I wanted to lighten things up. Sounds simple—it is,” Ty concludes.
GIVE ME A SECOND is Ty’s first full-length studio album, a follow up to his 2010 release, the Curveball - EP. Produced in Nashville by Joe Kane and released to worldwide audiences in April 2011, Give Me A Second has seen positive responses from both listeners and reviewers. G.K. Hizer of Urban Tulsa Weekly had this to say about Ty’s album—“With this release, Mayfield seems to have found his stride. All of the elements are still there, but the overall package is more cohesive and direct. I got a preview of the majority of the disc, but lead single "19 to 2" is a perfect example of what to expect from the disc: soulful piano pop with a rock 'n' roll backbone.”
Ty’s Tulsa upbringing has shaped his musical style. Since beginning to learn drums at six years old, Ty has gone on to discover and develop his powerful vocal style and dynamic stage presence. Tulsa has offered Ty’s poppy style a cultivating environment to grow in and flourish. Attending Dallas Baptist’s music business program hasn’t hurt either. Ty was offered the opportunity to play SXSW in 2010 through DBU’s chapter of GrammyU. And after signing on with management in April of 2011, Ty’s music has been featured Hollister and Ecko stores nationally.
Full time college student, a man of two cities, and an up and coming musician, Ty Mayfield is a busy man, but through all of this he always finds time to write.
