Her lyrics tell stories of our troubled times, focusing on homelessness and substance abuse.
After leaving home as a teenager, Vanessa became codependent on drugs and stopped attending her high school classes, thereby failing. She spent a lot of time watching live music, regularly sneaking into 18+ events.
She began to study music, and after learning how to create a major scale Vanessa worked to be able to buy a keyboard, after which she began learning to play the keys by ear. Next she moved onto drums and tried her hand at songwriting, which she found to be a very powerful outlet.
After Vanessa joined her first band, No Shame, she toured Western Australia. The next band she joined was Desert Rose, which released an EP titled I Want You.
Hopes featured on many Hip Hop collaborations before breaking out as a solo artist in 2014. She released two tracks at that time, both holding positions in the top 5 of Triple J’s Unearthed.
Vanessa has twice been a finalist in APRA’s international songwriting summit and has worked with many established artists throughout Australia including Archie Roach, Kav Temperley from Eskimo Joe and Rick Steele.
In 2016, Vanessa featured on Beni Bjah’s WAM award-winning album Survivor, and scored a film. She has also released several music videos, and produced and launched her debut album Free.
