In 2003, HMV Records Japan rated them #83 in their "Top 100 Japanese pops Artists. If Fishmans were categorized into a particular music group in Japan, it would be Shimokitazawa-kei music as opposed to Shibuya-kei music.
The fishmans sound is typically described as Dub. Their later works morphed into something beyond structure or convention as evident in their 1996 album "Long Season", which was an approximately 40 minute long progressive and continuous piece.
In 1998, Fishmans played their final concert with bassist Yuzuru Kawashibara.
In 1999 March 15th, vocalist Shinji Sato passed away.
Subsequently, the Fishmans legend did not end there. In 2004, a tribute album featuring covers of their songs by other artists (bonobos, UA etc) was released. The albums "Kuchu" and "Uchu" (2005) was a treat for fans - it included rare and unreleased tracks alongside their best hits. Most recently in 2006, "THE LONG SEASON REVUE" was finally released in DVD format. The live concert was originally only screened in theatres and it featured the original members of the band together with a cast of supporting musicians such as UA and Ikuko Harada.
Drummer Kin'ichi Motegi is currently with the Tokyo Ska Paradise Orchestra and bassist Yuzuru Kawashibara now plays for Polaris.
