On My Own
Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

On my own
Pretending he¥s beside me.
All alone I walk with him till morning
Without him
I feel his arms around me
And when I lose my way I close my eyes
And he has found me.
In the rain the pavement shines like silver
All the lights are misty in the river
In the darkness the trees are full of starlight
And all I see is him and me forever and forever.

And I know it¥s only in my mind
That I¥m talking to myself and not to him
And although I know that he is blind
Still I say there¥s a way for us.

I love him
But when the night is over
He is gone, the river¥s just a river
Without him the world around me changes
The trees are bare and everywhere
The streets are full of strangers.

I love him
But everyday I¥m learning
All my life I¥ve only been pretending
Without me his world will go on turning
A world that¥s full of happiness that I have never known.

I love him, I love him,
I love him, but only on my own.

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to 島田歌穂's song "On My Own" tell the story of a woman who is in love with a man who is not with her. The first verse describes her imagination of the man being beside her as she walks alone in the night. She feels his arms around her and imagines him finding her when she is lost. In the second verse, she acknowledges that it's all in her mind and that she's talking to herself instead of the man she loves. She knows that he cannot see her or be with her, yet she still wants to believe that there is a way for them to be together.

The chorus repeats her love for him, but also acknowledges the reality that the man is not with her. She realizes that without him, her world is not the same. She feels lost and alone, surrounded by strangers. However, she also acknowledges that she has been pretending to be with him all her life, and that the happiness she seeks cannot come from someone else. She loves him, but she knows that ultimately, she is on her own.

Through the lyrics of the song, the artist beautifully portrays the emotions of love, loss, and loneliness. The song speaks to the human desire for love and companionship, but also highlights the importance of self-love and acceptance. It reminds us that although we may feel alone at times, we are still capable of finding happiness within ourselves.
