Door
Mitski Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I've never seen it
Sometimes I get closer to it
But I've never found it
At twilight I almost had it
But then the night fell
I looked out at the dark and wondered
How could I have lost it?
Then one night at the park
I saw it with my cheek in the dirt
I couldn't move underneath the dark
But at least I finally found it
It cried out a creak and opened
To show me what's beyond it
A hopeless, a violence
I named it:
Love.
Mitski's "Door" is a metaphorical representation of a person's emotional vulnerability or the potential for deep love. The lyrics describe the singer's ongoing failure in finding this "door." This may suggest that the person had not fully exposed or understood their emotional capability yet. They may have attempted to get closer to the door in the past, but nothing ever came of it. During twilight, they thought they were close to finding it, but darkness crept in quickly, and they lost their chance. The singer feels hopeless and wonders how this vulnerability left them, as if they had misplaced it.
One night, whilst their cheek in the dirt at the park, they spot the door. However, they could not move, representing inertia or hesitation. This door is a physical manifestation of the singer's emotional self, which is difficult to confront because of its capacity to bring pain. It seems that their vulnerability is not a haven for comfort or refuge but an opening in the door for the feeling of "Love."
The singer knows what's beyond the door, a "hopeless" "violence," which they name Love. In this instance, Love is not soft, romantic or peaceful but a manifestation of the pain that comes with it. The door opens with a creaking sound, which seems to signify the pain that comes with the acceptance of love.
