Actually they are singing together. I was playing this song for my girlfriend and saw your comment. My parents were at this concert in Long Beach. I called and my dad said they always finished their concert with this song and Big Cheif and the Statesmen were on stage singing with them. I am quite proud to say I have this original album in my collection as it was one of my earliest memeries as a child.

My folks had this album as I grew up in the 60's. I have listened to this album thousands of times. My absolute favorite.
Before the album was lost, I recorded it onto a cassette tape and recently lost the cassette. Sadly, I thought these tunes were gone forever!! Found the album on EBAY and bought it again today!!!!!

love this one, its one of the first songs we learned to play and sing, one of nicks favs too. This is the first time we have heard it though, other than our version. We just found words and did our best. Glad you posted it. Enjoyed it very much.

@thebaldeaglet I used to listen to that album all the time when I was a kid. In the middle of "He Means All the World To Me" right when JD goes for the deep part of "...just inside the pearly city", a baby cries and he says, "bless his heart". At the end of the song, JD says something along the lines that he thought it was Big Chief crying. I wish I still had those records. My brother does now but oh what memories!

@MoodyMissions Actually That is Big Chief on the end, the statesmen joined in with them. If you listen closely at the 5:09 mark that is indeed Chief then he continues on followed by rosie rozell.

i am knocked down hearing this song when it seems all of them were 21 and under. i think JD is singing bass and if so i have never heard his voice so "young"? i did see JD and the Stamps around 1990 with JD, Ed Hill, Jack Toney, and Jerry Tramell and they did sing this song and brought the house down. until know i have never heard it sound better.

Onesimus747 JD was both young AND there was, at the time, an emphasis on blending except when being "featured". You'll notice that on the old films (50s & early 60s) neither JD nor Chief hugged the mic. (With the possible exception of the "take it home" bass glissando)

@statesmenfan I always thought it was Big Chief because if you listen closely someone yells, "Sing it again, Chief." I've heard this recording on and off over the years. I'm glad you cleared that up for me. I always doubted though because the personnel didn't match.

The Statesmen came out during the encore, you can hear James say Sing it Hovie, also you can hear Big Chief singing the next to last chorus, then Mama's Little Boy Rozie Rosell sings the last chorus. They all finish together.

Steve Willis In this recording, James says, "Sang it, Chief". If you have one with Hovie, I'd love to hear it. Why would he say "Sing it Hovie" when Chief is obviously featuring?

This is a classic due to the mistake at the end as J.D. takes it another round or two. I used to listen to this record with my dad back in the 60's and remember the Blackwoods visiting First Assembly in Roseburg, OR Big Chief sang with the Statesmen, not the Blackwood Brother's Quartet.

I wasn't there but the bass who joins in at 5:14 or so is distinctly not JD and sounds so much like Big Chief that it has to be him. He had a way of enunciating certain sounds and syllables that I am not able to express but can definitely hear and match to other known recordings of him.

Just to clear this up, there is no Big Chief in this line up. What is said is 'sing it again BILL' and the tenor Bill Shaw takes it away again. The line up was James Blackwood, Cecil Blackwood, Bill Shaw and J D Sumner. The painist was Wally Varner.

Oh my goodness the transcripts for this
Is ALL W R O N G. There is nothing about punting a football, nor pointing at a church. Come on guys. Satan took a hatchet to this transcript. Try singing this a capella. Powerful. The high tenor is fabulous on the Spanish version the Love of the Lord for me. They are from Memphis singing inLong Beach Ca. WHO can fix this ASAP.
