Outside Woman Blues
Blind Joe Reynolds Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If you lose your money, great god, don't lose your mind
If you lose your money, great god, don't lose your mind
If you lose your woman, please don't fool with mine

I'm gonna buy me a bulldog, watch my lady while I sleep
I'm gonna buy me a bulldog, watch my lady while I sleep
Women these days, they're so doggone crooked
Till they might make off 'fore day creep

Well, you can't watch your wife, outside women too
You can't watch your wife, outside women too
When you're out with your women, wife will be at home
Cookin' your food, doin' your dirt, buddy, what you tryin' to do?

Oh, you can't watch your wife, outside women too
Oh, you can't watch your wife, outside women too
When you're out with your women, wife will be at home
Cookin' your food, doin' your dirt, buddy, what you tryin' to?

Overall Meaning

Blind Joe Reynold's song "Outside Woman Blues" is a song that talks about the complexities that come with relationships, particularly when it comes to the topic of infidelity. The first stanza speaks to the importance of not losing one's mind if they were to lose their money. The following line, "If you lose your woman, please don't fool with mine," is a warning from the singer to the listener that if they were to lose their own woman, it would be unwise to attempt to pursue his.

The next stanza suggests a solution to the fear of losing one's woman to another man. The singer plans to buy a bulldog to watch his lady while he sleeps because, as he asserts, women in this day and age are unpredictable, and they might leave before daybreak. However, he goes on to say that it is not just outside women that one should worry about, but also their wives. When a man is out with his women, his wife will be at home, cooking his food and doing his dirt (presumably, cheating on him too), which could lead to further complications in their relationship.

In summary, "Outside Woman Blues" is a commentary on relationships and the difficulties that come with them, particularly around the topic of infidelity, and how one should tread carefully when it comes to pursuing another person's significant other.

So happy real musicians can hear a scratchy record and take the riffs and give them the magic so those of us with tin ears can appreciate how greatly were.

I had an original acetate of this record -- was a slightly different version and title - sold it to John Tefteller almost 20 years ago for about a half year's rent - I should have kept the record and slept outside

we were only exposed to this truly american music by listening to the great british rock bands like beatles n stones n clapton. they knew more about our own culture at that time than we did.
