Enduring the Eternal Molestation of Flame
Nile Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Let not my corpse rot in the necropolis
Let not my crimes be raised against me whilein the earth
Make my flesh and bones safe from maggots
And any false god who trepasses my tomb

You whose heart has been seized from thy breast
Save me from the ravages of deacay
The crawlingfeinds who take away limbs
Corpses who deny the inevitable truth
The lifetime of osiris is the sky and theirs is the ground

Save me from those imprisoned in the duat
Who know not yet they are already dead

Save me from the rotting dead
Who sleep inside their corpses
Whose breath becomes fire inside their water
At whose burning the sea rises at dawn

Grant methe immolating flame
Burn my sarcophagus
In opposition to the lords of eternity
I beg you
Prevent my corpse from putrefying in the realm of the dead

Enduring the eternal molestation of flame
The life time of osiris is the sky and theirs is the ground

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Nile's song "Enduring the Eternal Molestation of Flame" delve into the Egyptian mythology of the afterlife and fear of putrefaction. The first two lines implore the gods to keep the singer's corpse safe from putrefaction and any judgement that might arise against his or her crimes. The singer fears the crawling fiends and rotting dead, and begs for protection from them. The lifetime of Osiris is referred to as the sky, what is desired by all, while the ground is a reference to the afterlife and its dangers.

The singer of the song seeks preservation from harm while in the duat, the Egyptian underworld. The duat was thought to be a place of great peril because the spirits of the deceased encounter challenges to overcome to reach the afterlife. Some spirits are entirely unaware that they have passed away, and the singer seeks safety from them as well. The next stanza switches to a plea for the gods to save the singer from becoming one of the rotting dead who lie inside their corpses. This is the ultimate fear of many of ancients, as in the afterlife one should stay intact, and the putrefaction of the body represents a failure or punishment. Finally, the singer begs for the gift of the immolating flame, a cremation that opposed the traditional burial used in ancient Egypt. Despite the fact that this is an opposition to the lords of eternity, it was a desire for a swift end for those who thought the eternal molestation of flame was better than mummification.
