Beautiful Goodbye
Jennifer Hanson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's like the most amazing sunset you've ever seen
There's never another quite the same
It just falls into some deep eternal sea
Like the end of a movie that makes you cry
You're sad when it's over but you're glad you had
That moment that moved you deep inside

[Chorus]
Beautiful goodbye, baby goodbye
I enjoyed the ride, we really had us a time
It's a strange kind of high
A beautiful goodbye

An standin' here watchin' you drive away
We were so grown up about it all
But how will it look in the light of day?
I miss you already but don't turn around
It's funny how you know when it just won't work
And how letting go can echo the sweetest sound

[Chorus]

So ironic, and so confusing
To do the right thing and be losing
I'm always stuck with choosing
And ain't that just like life?
Hey yeah, hey yeah

[Chorus]

Goodbye, yeah
Goodbye

Overall Meaning

The song "Beautiful Goodbye" by Jennifer Hanson is a ballad about a relationship ending, implying that the end of the relationship is like the sun setting. The first verse describes the beauty of the sunset and the uniqueness of each sunset. The comparison is that the end of this relationship is like the sun setting, it can never be replicated, and it disappears into an eternal sea. The second half of the verse describes the feeling that we get when a good movie or something ends, we are glad we had the experience, but at the same time, we are sad it's over.
The chorus of the song repeats the phrase "a beautiful goodbye," which seems ironic because goodbyes are usually painful, but the singer is trying to reframe the end of the relationship as something beautiful. The singer also repeats that she enjoyed the ride and that they had a great time together. The song's lyrics explain that breakups are inevitable and sometimes even necessary, but the memories of the time spent together should still be joyful even if it's over. The final verse describes the difficulty of the situation, how it was the right thing to do, but it still feels like she's losing something valuable. The singer acknowledges that life is full of choices and sometimes things don't work out.

Two comments t u two . Two
Worlds each stand alone ... One :
London veiled ;memories are pulses
felt. Situation limited in a most limited way. Looking forward t u
other "sides" of this ended avenue.
Prose have come in the past with fragments of felt impulses .
But end is. My future belongs ; with
another, of another ,for another.
In a more private canvas I'd say;
what alludes t u what only two
would know. If this ain't a thespians'
goodbye ... with another curtain call
planned ... I'd say more .
Don't you ALL regret - taking your
privacy away from it bein' just you and me ?

I wrote this song with Jennifer a long time ago. At the time, for me, it was about someone I loved but had to let go. Now, it seems to have new meaning every time I turn around. We also wrote the song TRAVIS on that album. But somehow the beautiful goodbyes last a lifetime.
love to all,

Always loved this song. Wondered why it never crossed over to pop radio or got covered. Her style on this reminds me of Cheryl Crows stuff from that period.

It's a wonderful tune. Weather letting go of someone, or sadly losing a loved one, this is saying goodbye in a upbeat way. Terrific work

I was playing guitar in the early 2000's with a teenage girl named Chelsee Oaks here in northern Michigan. We use to include this song into your sets. I was with her for 5 years till she moved to Nashville to make it on her own. During those five years we opened for many top country artists. Chelsee ultimately made it to the American Idol finals in California. For being a young teen, Chelsee had a great talent conveying the adult messages in many songs like this one that you and Jennifer wrote.
A heartfelt thank you to you for supplying us with a great song to give to our audiences.
