The Sky Is Burning
Sam Gopal Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

[Verse One]
The sky is burning
Red and gold the clouds are sweeping clean the air
My thoughts returning
To time when there was only you to share

[Bridge]
Then I learned there was more to life than this
I learned it with your kiss and you began to die

[Verse Two]
I only knew you for a night and day
You reached into my heart and went your way
And with your going there was sadness
For I knew you would not return and will you think of me at all?

Dada dada dada dada'n da'n dada'n da

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Sam Gopal's song The Sky Is Burning speak about the pain of losing someone you love and the memories that haunt you after they have gone. The song starts with the vivid imagery of a sky that is burning, as if the whole world is coming to an end. The color red and gold signify the intensity of the emotions involved. It's like the sky is sweeping clean the air from all the pain and sorrow, leaving the singer's thoughts returning to the time when there was only the love of one person to share.

The bridge is a pivotal moment in the song, as it explains the realization that there is more to life than the single-minded love that was shared by the singer and the person they lost. It is the moment when they learned about other things in life that make it worth living, and it was something that they learned through the love and the kiss of the person they lost. The lyrics are hauntingly beautiful as it describes the beginning of the process of letting go while still bearing the burden of love.

The second verse reflects on the briefness of the time that they shared together. The love was intense, but too short to last, as the person they loved reached into their heart and went their own way. The pain of losing them is unbearable, and the thought of living life without them is suffocating. There's sadness for the singer as the person they love did not return, leaving the singer to wonder if they will ever think of them again.

From hippie stoner to metal head. What an extreme transition!

Interesting to hear him singing 'clean'... for everyone, Lemmy's voice just meant that gravelly snarl...

I dunno, it sounds pretty musical to me... but there's more to singing rock music than just conventional clean vocals (with all respect to those who excel in that style - Bruce Dickinson hitting a G5 is spine-tingling)... Lemmy's voice had soul. If Louis Armstrong had been a white guy from Staffordshire, he'd have sounded like Lemmy...

+rikhardur I guess no one cared in the 60's, I cannot think of a 60's era rock band with a singer who's really in tune.

@DIErector31

+rikhardur when you sing it doesn't mean that you have to hit all the notes correctly.It's more than that

@WhatHaveIMade

Also interesting to see him playing the guitar...
