Crazy part is Aang wasn't even in a coma. He straight up died, if only for a short time. By the grace of God and some magic water, Katara barely managed to bring him back to life. The saddest thing about this is that Azula was only 14 years old. Sometimes you forget, because she was constantly on her demon time and dressed like a soldier, but Azula was quite literally just a child trying to do what she thought would make her father most proud of her. Zuko was the exact same at the start of the series. Everything he did was to make Ozai love him again; the only real difference between them is that Zuko had a goated caretaker like Iroh to guide him and teach him to hold onto his humanity. Azula had nothing in her life but a lukewarm father and a bunch of yes men who feared her. I like to imagine that if she'd had someone who genuinely loved her enough to hold her accountable and support her from the very beginning, she might've turned out able to turn her life around just like Zuko did.

But while Azula was fire lord she had the power to fire, hire, or promote anyone she wanted including the Dai Li. I recently came up with an alternate dynamic between Azula and Aang:

She still falls at the air temple, right when Zuko says, “She’s not gonna make it.” Aang takes notice and in a moment of impulse, Aang jumps down, glides toward her, catches her, and lands her safely on the ground, saving her life, he then quickly flies back to Appa and they take off a split second after.
This would no doubt ship away another piece of her false reality. Imagine the shame and humiliation she'd feel after that. She most likely wouldn't even be able to lightningbend anymore and Zuko got his chest scar from a regular boring blue fireball. As she’s randomly banishing people, she’ll probably give the same ultimatum as Ozai; capture the avatar, and their honor shall be restored.

Due to Azula being a descendant of Aang's past life Roku. (and/or due to Ozai being Vaatu in disguise in the case of my take on a dark avatar Ozai) Aang and Azula become spiritually, connected, linked, and bonded with each other. This bond was created after Aang had let go of Katara and embraced his last chakra twice. It goes deeper than physical connections.
This bond unites them as fate, allowing them to understand each other, share each other's experiences, derive character development from each other, and grow closer to each other than anyone else despite being on opposite sides of the war. Aang would even be able to know when Azula lies better than Toph can and vice versa.
This connection grows stronger over time. It reaches its apex after Azula has opened and mastered her own chakras.

There is actually a reason for Zuko's haircut in Book 1. The top-knot is worn by royalty and those that are banished are suppose to shave their heads. So that's why he has pretty much just enough hair to have a ponytail, it shows that he is banished-royalty. Zuko's hair throughout the series is suppose to match his character as he progresses.

Fun fact 4:40-4:46 that is among the sounds a T.rex would make! No joke, there are videos on YouTube that detail the discovery of sounds that T.rex made. This is a good breakdown on Azula and her character in the show. It's good she is getting redeemed as well. Redemption is a blessing and available for everyone no matter how evil the actions committed. I've been redeemed from my college senate days and it has been remarkable in life since. The hair band thing is a reference to Japan's Shoguns. They would grow their hair out long and then do it up in a pony tail. If they were dishonored, they'd cut the ponytail off, and have to get it back in blood. (that last part might be wrong, but I'm setting the scene)

Zuko still had his hairband because even in exile, he was still the Crown Prince, so he still had that clout. Iroh was a respected veteran, and so he kept his on... Eventually, when Zuko and Iroh get jumped because the fecking captain of that boat spoke the quiet part aloud, they cut their hair in disgrace. And for the rest of the series, they're doing one of three things: Laying low, fighting Aang, or trying to get it back in blood against Azula or the Fire Lord

Azula is a tragic character. Her father made her a weapon and had no other purpose for her, he leveraged his approval to mold her into his perfect executor. She does everything the way she thinks he’d want things done and wins the war for him… and her reward is nothing but a meaningless title while her father alone goes to claim the world. She thought she was the favorite child and then realized she’s no different than Zuko. Ozai never cared for either of them, but Azula was useful to him. Everything Azula ever did… was for nothing. The only person she wanted approval from never saw her as anything but a tool he was ready to put back on the shelf.

The terrifying thing about Azula is that she gets even more unhinged in the comics.

(SPOILER ALERT)

So some years after the main story, whileAzula was in solitary confinement, Zuko discovers that his mom had gone to get some orange juice, and ended up... getting "juiced". She got a new man and Zuko might have gotten a sibling if he showed up at her door a year later.

Naturally, he's over the moon, but he makes the mistake of telling Azula thinking the good news might fix her a little... forgetting she has daddy AND mommy issues, so he ends up in a race against time to stop her from deleting their mother

I saw a video that went over that scene and Azula in general and their conclusion was that what really broke her about it was the fact that Ozai basically made a title above fire lord in the form of the Pheonix king thus him giving her the title of fire lord was more so him just throwing it away as lesser and saying metaphorically "This title is worthless now that I'm about to rule the world so you might as well take it since its only really symbolic now and doesn't hold much meaning anymore" thus it was more so just something to possibly placate her and to her she didn't really feel like she earned the title in the intended/traditional way and was kinda being discarded by Ozai, the last person she had that meant anything to her, at the same time.

You wouldn't be aware of this if you haven't read the tie-in comics, but Azula actually made a full recovery. In fact, after she got the chance to speak with her mother, she actually ended up in a better place mentally than she was when she was first introduced in the show. The final tie-in comic had her secretly forming an organization to safeguard Zuko's reign.

Just a reminder, Azula is one of those villains that manage to kill (technically speaking) off the main character of a show. If Katara didn't have that special healing water, Aang would've stayed dead. Remember what Roku said
