How He Loves
John Mark McMillan Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

He is jealous for me
Love's like a hurricane, I am a tree
Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy
When all of a sudden
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory
And I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great your affections are for me

Oh, how He loves us so
Oh, how He loves us
How He loves us so

He is jealous for me
Love's like a hurricane, I am a tree
Bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy
When all of a sudden
I am unaware of these afflictions eclipsed by glory
And I realize just how beautiful You are
And how great your affections are for me

Oh, how He loves us so
Oh, how He loves us
How He loves us so

Yeah, He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves

Yeah, He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves

So we are His portion and He is our prize
Drawn to redemption by the grace in His eyes
If grace is an ocean, we're all sinking
So heaven meets Earth like a sloppy wet kiss
And my heart turns violently inside of my chest
I don't have time to maintain these regrets
When I think about the way

That He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves

He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves

(He loves us)
(Whoa, how He loves us)
(Whoa, how He loves us)
(Whoa, how He loves us)
(Whoa, how He loves us)
(Whoa, how He loves us)
(Whoa, how He loves us)
(Whoa, how He loves)

Oh, I thought about You the day Stephen died
And You met me between my breaking
I know that I still love You, God
Despite the agony
Listen, people, they want to tell me You're cruel
But if Stephen could sing
He'd say it's not true, 'cause

'Cause He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves

Yeah, He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves us
Whoa, how He loves

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to John Mark McMillan's song How He Loves are a poetic and emotional depiction of God's overwhelming love and mercy for humanity. The opening lines, "He is jealous for me, love's like a hurricane, I am a tree bending beneath the weight of His wind and mercy," paint a vivid picture of God's all-consuming love and the effect it has on the recipient.

As the song progresses, the singer becomes increasingly aware of the incredible depths of God's love, singing "And I realize just how beautiful You are and how great your affections are for me." This realization leads the singer to a place of pure worship and adoration, with repeated refrains of "Oh, how He loves us so."

The simultaneously tender and explosive refrain "So heaven meets Earth like a sloppy wet kiss, and my heart turns violently inside of my chest" is a poignant reminder that God's love is not just an abstract concept or reserved for a select few, but a force that can truly transform and shake the very core of a person.

Overall, How He Loves is a powerful and moving tribute to the love and grace of God, and a call to all listeners to surrender themselves to its transformative power.

I do see that many people are speaking about the changing of the one line in this song. Just so everyone knows, this is the man that actually wrote this song.

@sonicgauge1

You wrote this song?

@joshuaogbonna5769

He meant that John mark is the original writer of this song...

@brandonmullins8812

The only reason why people would want to change that line is because of carnality and religiosity. When my little two-year-old gives me a kiss it is sloppy and wet and I love it

@chanmonymiller1698

@Brandon Mullins one of the better comments I've heard about this. Not a hill I'm willing to die on, but this is my favorite version.

@1SheepishWolf

It's stupid because Morningstar made him change it to sing on their stage. Gods love is like a sloppy wet kiss. It's not carnal, it's like a father kissing his child or a kid kissing their parent. It's just pure love.

Best version, it hits different when the author is singing

@calebdaigrepont7306

when the bridge verse where it says “if His grace is an ocean we’re all sinking” it just clicked, that He shows so much overwhelming grace for all the sins we’ve committed and we are drowned in it and so blessed for His grace

@thegreatdivinie

5th dimensional grace absolutely dwarfs 3rd dimensional sin
