Dance With Me
Earl Klugh Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Dance with me, I want to be your partner
Can't you see the music is just starting?
Night is falling, and I am falling
Dance with me

Fantasy could never be so giving
I feel free, I hope that you are willing
Pick the beat up, and kick your feet up
Dance with me

Let it lift you off the ground
Starry eyes, and love is all around us
I can take you where you want to go

Dance with me, I want to be your partner
Can't you see the music is just starting?
Night is falling, and I am falling
Dance with me

Let it lift you off the ground
Starry eyes, and love is all around us
I can take you if you want to go

Dance with me, I want to be your partner
Can't you see the music is just starting?
Night is falling, and I am falling
Dance with me

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Earl Klugh's song "Dance With Me" are a heartfelt call to a potential dance partner. The singer is urging someone to dance with him, seeing the "music is just starting" and the "night is falling." He describes how fantasy has never been so giving and how he feels free, hoping that they too are willing to let go and enjoy themselves.

The singer paints a picture of a magical moment, as if their dance together will "lift [them] off the ground" and bring "love...all around us." He promises to take them wherever they want to go if they'll only dance with him. The repetition of the closing lines, "Dance with me, I want to be your partner/ Can't you see the music is just starting?/ Night is falling, and I am falling/ Dance with me," underscores his passionate plea for connection and enjoyment.

Taken as a whole, the song is a celebration of music and dance as a means of escaping the stresses of daily life and connecting with others. The singer seeks both physical and emotional connection, urging his partner to let go and be vulnerable with him in the moment. Through the music and dance, the two can experience something greater than themselves, and find comfort in each other's company.

It was 1975 and I took the love of my life...Denise to Detroit's Bakers keyboard lounge to listen to the beautiful jazz guitar of Earl Klugh. Denise broke my heart for another but everytime i listen to Earl Klugh i think of 1975 and the love i lost and shed a tear for wonderful memories of so long ago.

This album was my introduction not only to Earl Klugh but also to Dave Grusin. My wife and I saw Earl in person twice in Chicago - and once we ran into him at a restaurant between shows.
