Jeepers creepers
Ethel Waters Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
When the weatherman says it's raining
You'll never hear me complaining
I'm certain the sun will shine
I don't care how the weather vane points
When the weather vane points to gloomy
It's gotta be sunny to me
When your eyes look into mine
Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those peepers?
Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those eyes?
Gosh all, git up, how'd they get so lit up?
Gosh all, git up, how'd they get that size?
Golly gee, when you turn those heaters on
Woe is me, got to put my cheaters on
Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those peepers?
Oh, those weepers, how they hypnotize!
Where'd ya get those eyes?
The lyrics of Ethel Waters's song "Jeepers Creepers" are both straightforward and playful, highlighting how the singer remains optimistic in any situation, even when it's raining and gloomy. It's a fun, flirty song that captures the singer's attention to their lover's eyes and the feeling of being completely charmed and hypnotized by them.
The song starts with the singer talking about how they don't care what the weatherman says, even if it's raining, they will not complain as they are certain that the sunshine will come back again. The singer sings about how they don't care how the weather vane points, even if it's pointing gloomy, they will still see the sunny side of things as long as they have their lover's eyes looking into theirs.
The song's playful tone is captured in the chorus when the singer asks "Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those peepers?" They're completely enchanted by their lover's eyes and wonder how they became so lit up and what caused them to be so large. The singer goes on to sing, "Golly Gee, when you turn those heaters on, woe is me, gotta put my cheaters on," where the "heaters" are the eyes of their lover and the "cheaters" are glasses to see them even clearer. The song ends with the singer asking again, "Jeepers creepers, where'd ya get those peepers? Oh, those weepers, how they hypnotize! Where'd ya get those eyes?"

Absolutley!

Definitely. She's tremendous. When music stand up to time like hers does, that says it all. Music had a way of leaving you with very intense feelings deep in your soul that are always stirred right back up as soon as the first note is sung (or strummed, or drummed or whatever). I don't think music has the same way of offering that these days unless it's someone like Adele who is reborn from an Era such as this.
Black female singers were everything back then. I mean I'm only 47 but I definitely know the good stuff when I hear it. Billie Holiday and Ella's Fitzgerald. Bessie Smith....they were absolute gems.
