I have always loved this piece. It is a powerful piece of storytelling.

Prompted only by the name, I hear a story of a battle to defend against enemy attackers.

0:00 - 0:38 The enemy appearing in the distance
0:38 - 1:05 Defenders raising the alarm in the village and amassing the troops
1:05 - 1:45 The defenders assuming their formation
1:45 - 2:25 Riders being sent out carrying orders

Our cartoons in the 50's from the great studios incorporated classical music pieces that gave children insight into the music of the masters and made them familiar. It's a shame young people of today don't have those opportunities to experience this musical exposure for the generations to enjoy that lasts through lifetimes.

This piece has special meaning to me. This was performed for years by South American circus impresario Orlado Orfei on one of the last remaining musical dancing fountains built by genius engineer Otto Przystawik. Live performance of these fountains is a difficult and demanding task, and performing one song for decades surely makes for a polished performance! If and when I finish my personal musical fountain, this will be one of the first songs to be choreographed.

For how many years, I've wondered if I'd ever know about this...

Ever since I first listened to it as Track 30 from The Incredible Toon Machine (yeah, that long ago) I've always loved it. Never knew the piece or the composer, my old Windows computer would eventually die, and it faded from memory.

Fast-forward to last week or so, and I re-discover it thanks to those Hooked on Classics albums... Finally had a name and composer to it, and been re-living great memories ever since.

Thank you Royal Philharmonic Orchestra, thank you Classical Music Only, and of course thank you to Franz von Suppé. =D

The first time I ever heard this was on a mechanical piano in my grandfather's pub in Springfield Ill. I was six, and I've loved it ever since. So grabbing and romantic and silly! I just let my mind try to capture the title. Thanks.

We used to play this piece in Hank Karch's Plectrophonic Symphony Orchestra that was created by Hank at Wurlitzer's Music Company on 4th St. in Cincinnati, OH. We played at many spring/summer music festivals in the area and this piece was one of our favorites!!

Iconic piece overused as background incidental in many dramatic TV shows, anytime a character is riding a horse; also a staple in Chuck Jones cartoons; still,
a fine, evocative work I think it's on par with anything Rossini wrote! ( and thanks to the poster)

Difficult to say when comparing composers. Rossini is a major one. First Act of Barber of Seville is perfect musical theatre I think. The duet between Almaviva and Figaro, a l’idea di quel metalo, etc, sheer delight!

I've heard this piece many times and cannot hear it enough. I was blessed with a highly visual imagination (made my living with it) and the equestrian movement and inspiration is vivid here...as is the sadness following the carnage of battle. Beautiful!
