Here's To Moving On
Dashboard Confessional Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I feel like I find something new
To remind me of you all the time
A picture, a hair band, a song
Or this cork from this bottle of wine
The click of the thermostat kicking off
Just when it's getting too warm
The drop in the pressure
The smell in the air when it's starting to storm

And I hate to admit
That it's true
But I like that it hurts
When I do

Here's to fightin' less
Here's to livin' more
Here's to feelin' alive again
Here's to pickin' yourself off the floor
Here's to wakin' up
Here's to sleepin' well for once
Here's to knowin' the things that you wish you could change
Here's to sayin' you're fine when you're not
Here's to bein' right
Here's to bein' wrong
Here's to lettin' go
Here's to movin' on

I stand in one place and just listen
And let myself feel how it sounds
A little bit hollow, a little bit hopeful
A little bit down
This house isn't empty, exactly
It's settlin' down for the night
It's creakin' and crackin'
And it seems familiar but doesn't feel right

All that time that it takes
To let go
How could I be the last
One to know

Here's to fightin' less
Here's to livin' more
Here's to feelin' alive again
Here's to pickin' yourself off the floor
Here's to wakin' up
Here's to sleepin' well for once
Here's to knowin' the things that you wish you could change
Here's to sayin' you're fine when you're not
Here's to bein' right
Here's to bein' wrong
Here's to lettin' go
Here's to movin' on

I'm gettin' up slowly
I'm still a bit spent, I'm still a bit tired
I feel a bit better this mornin'
Than I've felt in quite a long time
It's funny I thought for a bit there
I'd never be able to deal
But I make some coffee and I take a shower
And I start to heal

And I hate to admit
That I can
But I like how it feels
That I am

So here's to fightin' less
Here's to livin' more
Here's to feelin' alive again
Here's to pickin' yourself off the floor
Here's to wakin' up
Here's to sleepin' well for once
Here's to knowin' the things that you wish you could change
Here's to sayin' you're fine when you're not
Here's to bein' right
Here's to bein' wrong
Here's to lettin' go
Here's to movin' on

Overall Meaning

The song "Here's To Moving On" by Dashboard Confessional is about the pain of letting go and moving on after a relationship has ended. The lyrics reflect the singer's struggle to move on, as they keep finding reminders of their former partner in different places. Whether it's a hair band or a bottle of wine, everything seems to remind them of their lost love. They can't help but feel a little bit hopeful, even though they also feel down.

The singer is both proud of and ashamed of their feelings. They hate to admit that they enjoy the hurt and that they are happy to feel alive again, but they also find some comfort in the fact that they are slowly healing. The song shows that letting go of someone you once loved can be a long and difficult process, but it is also necessary in order to move on with one's life.

In the end, the singer is able to pick themselves up and move forward. They realize that life goes on, and that they must continue to fight for themselves and their happiness. The song ends on a positive note, with the singer celebrating the new opportunities and experiences that await them in the future.

Back in the day, I was in a band called small-town hero, and we had the opportunity to open up for Chris and Dashboard in Philly, just a few songs into my set I looked over my shoulder off stage and Chris was standing there just jamming out to my song and Vibin with my bandā€¦ it was one of the most incredible feelings of my life at that time.
Now many years later, after Iā€™ve suffered and overcome complete organ failure in 2003, being in a severe car accident nine years ago, suffering a major brain injury six years ago, going through a spinal surgery and fusion 6 months agoā€¦
And now Iā€™m going through a divorce after 15 years of marriage to the mother of my six kids, Chris is still right there Off stage at my side writing songs like this that are made to be lifeā€™s soundtrack as we overcome together!

Peace and love to all, we got this!!

@River Raven It was hard to think straight. We still fight a bit though but I think this time I need to let go my anger off. Not good for us.

River Raven

@jere PRT I'm so glad you had second thoughts.

I'm finally getting back to taking care of myself again after a heartbreak three years later. I went out and got a bunch of stuff for my place to make it look like a home and one of those things was a cheap record player. This album was the first vinyl I ever bought and this is my favorite number on there. I feel like I heard this song for the first time just exactly when I needed to in my life.

I get it. But then you realize it's about a motorcycle accident and feel like a little b***c.
