Stoned
Smash Mouth Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And everybody's movin' on
I can't see my tomorrow and yesterday has come and gone
So leave me alone
My mind is blown but it's my own
So deal with it
I'm feeling fine most the time
I may be on the outside but no ones getting in
So leave me alone
We're O.K. reelin' in the days
We're alright we're just getting high
Let us be it'll be all right
I got no strife I'm loving life
Could you say the same
You don't have to move to groove
So come on up and see me but leave that judge behind
'Cause I'm loving life
Chorus
Chorus
I'm gettin' stoned and what's wrong with that
The president seems to be just fine
Come on up and see me
Come on up just know that I'm gettin' stoned
I'm gettin' stoned I'm gettin' stoned I'm gettin' stoned
Chorus
The lyrics to Smash Mouth's song Stoned depict a person who wants to be left alone and is quite content with living life his own way. The person expresses that he is over the things that have happened in the past and is not too worried about what the future holds. The line "my mind is blown but it's my own" suggests that even though the person may indulge in some form of drug use, it is his personal choice and he doesn't want anyone to meddle with his personal affairs.
The person is also quite aware of the society's standpoint on drug use and feels that people should overlook his indulgences and look at the big picture. He asks those who criticize him to "leave that judge behind" and come see him for who he is, without any preconceived notions. The person seems to be living in the moment, enjoying life as it comes and not stressing about anything.
The chorus with the lyrics "I'm getting stoned, and what's wrong with that?" suggest that the person does not see anything wrong with drug use and feels that it is a personal choice. The lyrics, overall, do not glorify drug use, but rather depict a person who wants to be left alone and does not want anyone to pass judgment on him based on his indulgences.

Smash Mouth really doesn't get enough credit for being so willing to experiment and jump genres so seamlessly. Great song, underrated band. They're not just those guys from Shrek...
Ismail
To be fair, I think Griggs' point was more "All Star wasn't the only thing they made; people should listen to their other songs."
Imagiman
ismail, to be fair, this album was fucking great.
Jake G
I think they went downhill once they were on Shrek.

There’s a line of demarcation. That song was on the radio in 1999. Children know it as “shrek.” People who were alive in 1999 know it as that annoying song from the radio that we’re embarrassed was stuck in our heads. I think that explains the critical mass of shrek memes.

Jake G not downhill, they made a shit ton of money from it and probably still do, but in return it made them infamous for it and nothing but a meme to the newer culture, really sucks.

You're gonna be missed, Steve. Thanks for the music.

Honestly, Astro Lounge was a goddamn great album.

Eternal Magnum Opus of them, as comercially sayin' with All Star, and even the other songs, very excellent songs. we simply have no ''b-songs'' in this entire album.
