INTRO

"Good evening. This is the intergalactic operator. Can I help you?"
"Yes. I'm trying to reach flight commander P.R. Johnson, on Mars, flight 2-4-7"
"Very well, hold on please [beeping] you're through!"
"Thank you operator!"

VERSE 1 :

Hi darlin' ! How are you doing ?
Hey baby, where're your sleeping ?
Oh I'm sorry, but I've been really missing you !

Hi darlin' ! How's the weather?
Say baby, is that cold better now ?
Oh I'm sorry, is there someone there with you??

BRIDGE:

Ooooh...since you went away, there's nothing goin' right !
I just can't sleep alone at night... I'm not ashamed to say
I badly need a friend...or it's the end.

CHORUS:

Now, when I look at the cloud's across the moon.
Here in the night I just hope and pray that soon.
Oh baby, you'll hurry home to me.

VERSE 2 :

Hi darlin', the kids say they love you.
Hey baby, is everything fine with you?
Please forgive me, but I'm trying not to cry...

BRIDGE :

Ooooh...I've had a million different lovers on the phone.
But I just stayed right here at home.
I don't think that I can take it anymore this crazy war.

CHORUS

"I'm sorry to interrupt your conversation, but we are
Experiencing violent storm conditions in the asteroid belt at this
Time. We may lose this valuable deep space communication link.
Please, be as brief as possible.
Thank you."

BRIDGE

or it's...or it's..."Hello?" "Hello operator?"
" Yes, we've lost the connection! Could you try again please?"
-"I'm sorry, but I'm afraid we've lost contact with Mars 2-4-7
At this time."

Overall Meaning

Clouds Across the Moon by The Rah Band is a song about a woman in a long-distance relationship with her partner, who is a flight commander on Mars. The song starts with the woman calling the intergalactic operator to connect her to her partner, P.R. Johnson. The song is set in the night, and she starts telling her partner about how much she misses him and how she has been longing for him. She asks about his health, and if he's better from his cold. She also inquires if anyone is with him because of the silence on the other end of the line.

As the song continues, the woman becomes more emotional about missing her partner, and admitting that she needs a friend. She says that since he left, things haven't been the same, and she can't sleep alone at night. The chorus includes the most memorable lines in the song, where the woman stares at the moon and hopes that her partner will come back soon.

Throughout the song, there are interruptions in the communication due to storm conditions, and as it comes to an end, the woman is resigned to the fact that she won't be able to speak to her partner this year, and that they must wait to speak to each other next year. The solo bass-guitar and the chorus intermezzo add to the romantic and poignant mood of the song.

TO BE CONTINUE . . .

I've never heard a song that so elegantly walks the line between being astronomically funky and unbelievably sad.

I used to listen to this song when I was a little girl in Brazil. At that time I didn't know its meaning. But it just sounded beautiful in my ears. Today I live separated from my husband. And when I listen to it, specially to these words: " Hi darling, the kids say they love you. Hey baby, is everything fine with you? Please forgive me but I am trying not to cry", it makes me so sad... I never thought I could feel like the woman in this song. Though my husband doesn't live on Mars, it seems to me he is so far away from me and our children. It is always sad when the love is gone 😔

@johnallan4951

I agree! Sorry.
