“Goodbye Pork Pie Hat” is a jazz instrumental piece by bassist Charles Mingus. The song was written to a tribute to the late jazz saxophonist Lester Young, known for wearing a distinctive pork pie hat. Mingus was deeply affected by Young's death and wanted to honor him with a musical tribute.

This version is from the album Blues & Politics by the Mingus Big Band and it was recorded in 1999. 20 years after his death so it is one of a few ensembles put together to play Charlie Mingus music. This particular big band made 11 albums and in this record the saxophone player is Seamus Blake born in England moved to canada and went to Berklee School.
@slohan99
Agree, the internet should increase our knowledge. As was stated Seamus Blake is the saxophone player here born in England in 1970 and raised in Vancouver Canada. Good example of a young (relatively) player worth listening to. We should all be making an effort to listen to live music, not just listening at home.

Wish I had the talent to put my grief, pain and sadness in such a soulful way, but the most I can manage is ugly crying and inappropriate jokes.
This piece reminds me so much of a good friend I had back in my home country. We had grown apart in the way that life pulls some friends apart, but whenever we managed to talk to each other the warmth was still there. We'd still joke , we'd still talk and laugh about dumb shit and make jokes about our situations in life. He had a lovely family with a woman that loved him dearly and a beautiful daughter.
He died like 3 years ago, in a sudden way. That same damn distance prevented me from even knowing that he had passed away until several days later. And since I had left my home country a couple of years before his passing, I was never able to say goodbye, to offer my condolences to his family in a meaningful way, to lower him to the sepulcher and bid him farewell. Even remembering it right now, after so long, tugs at my heart in a violent way.
I still remember you brother, especially on a jazzy night like this one. I can at least smile knowing that, after so many difficult years, you were loved and blessed.

@PghCrawfords2K
I had the rare pleasure of seeing Mingus perform live at the Astrodome “jazz” festival in the early 70s. Although various illnesses apparently limited his physical mobility, the great bassist and his band still performed with fire and passion. He was the opening act that night (what a travesty and insult to this great legend) and when Rahsaan Roland Kirk came on stage next, he cussed those in the audience’s asses out real good for disrespecting Mingus while he was performing!

Goodbye Pork Pie Hat was composed by Mingus and recorded originally in 1959 with his Sextet. Mingus was a bassist, pianist and composer; most noted for his compositional genius, improvisational style, and meticulous mastery of instrumentation. Mingus is commonly regarded by musicians and historians as the most important and influential Jazz musician of all time; composing, producing, and executing some of the most complex, intricate, and hauntingly beautiful works ever recorded. Since its original recording; Goodbye Pork Pie Hat remains the quintessential standard for many Jazz recording artists. However, the original; encompasses something very special and unique to Mingus. Measure and instrument individuality represents staple of Mingus style; listen to how each instrument is introduced, coordinated and combined to musical perfection. Spaces between notes and measures speak with same intensity as sound.

Booker Ervin worked with Charles Mingus from 1956 to 1963. He performed "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" on the album Mingus Ah Um released in 1959 by Columbia Records. When Columbia first issued the album in 1959, six of the album's nine songs were edited in order to fit them on the LP and they were shortened by several minutes. "Goodbye Pork Pie Hat" was shortened to five minutes and 44 seconds. In 1979 the six tracks were restored and three other recordings were discovered. Later reissues have the full-length versions and the three new tracks.

I mean the one where I had to find the most accurate and satisfying answer to the burning question! Who is playing sax on this recording? So I asked my friend Richard, (an amazing musician and walking encyclopedia), :-D and he says there are 2 musicians playing sax on this recording: John Handy on Tenor sax and Booker Ervin on Alto sax! I trust in his word. So that's what I'm going with, and thought I'd share in the comments. :) (If it's already been shared, my apologies...I didn't read through each of the 2,194 comments.) *This recording is A.MA.ZING. @JokingCarl Thank you for uploading this stellar music! Endless thanks to Charles Mingus for writing this gem, as a tribute to the late, great, Lester Young. xo Thank you, Richard for gathering and sharing your knowledge over the years! XO

Mingus is my ultimate favorite of jazz musicians. He passed the year I graduated high school. It's obvious we didn't grow up together, but one of the reasons I feel connected to him is that we grew up in the same neighborhood. The other is his kaleidoscope of great music composition. It draws me in. I have his book, "Beneath The Underdog" as part of my collection; it's a great read.

OMG! This music is pulling my heartstrings! I am an emotional mess right now!

This is a Great Version of Mingus's legendary tribute to the "Prez" Lester Young. But I love the original as well along with Jeff Beck's iteration on solo guitar... All are very tastefully performed and are a true tribute to Our President of Saxophone...Lester Willis Young!
@josephlemko3027

This is my favorite composition by Mingus. When I hear this tune, I think of him. The cat was a musical genius.

My dads absolute favorite. I decided to put it in my dads obituary. People said they didn't understand, I said then they must've not understood my dad
