Smooth Seas Don't Make Good Sailors
Neck Deep Lyrics

I guess it held some kind of meaning.
I've been lying in this bed of nails,
That let the wind out of my sails.
She left me on the bridge she's burning;
Hell, maybe I deserve it.
I'm just trying to find my purpose,
I hope that it's all worth it
There will come a time,
When you will face your life,
Don't let it twist and tear you up inside
The world's a fucked up place,
but it depends on how you see it
Life is full of change,
you grow up and then you feel it
But smooth seas don't make good sailors,
Jump ship and head for failure,
Find yourself a tragedy,
Slowly lose your sanity
I'll be alright, your bark was worse than your bite.
Left a scar that faded with time,
Echoed out to the back of my mind
There will come a time,
When you will face your life,
Don't let it twist and tear you up inside
The world's a fucked up place,
but it depends on how you see it
Life is full of change,
you grow up and then you feel it
But smooth seas don't make good sailors,
Jump ship and head for failure,
Find yourself a tragedy,
Slowly lose your sanity
I've been walking round in circles,
cursed every corner of this town,
Will I make it out?
If I do then it's a godsend
I caught a bullet in-between my teeth
Could this finally be the end?
There will come a time,
When you will face your life,
Don't let it twist and tear you up inside
The world's a fucked up place, but it depends on how you see it
Life is full of change, you grow up and then you feel it
But smooth seas don't make good sailors,
Jump ship and head for failure,
Find yourself a tragedy,
Slowly lose your sanity
In Neck Deep’s song Smooth Seas Don't Make Good Sailors, the lyrics talk about the struggles that come with life and the human experience, which is full of change, tragedy, and loss. The singer is struggling to find his purpose, lost, and left lying in a bed of nails. The line "I guess it held some kind of meaning" implies that everything that happened to him has a significance that he is still trying to grasp. The bridge mentioned in the song could represent the bond that he had with someone before she burned it down, which could also suggest that he lost someone he trusted. The line "Jump ship and head for failure" implies that sometimes it is better to take risks and experience failure than to remain in a safe, unfulfilling situation.
In the chorus, the lyrics emphasize that the world is a dark and painful place, but the way we perceive it is entirely up to us. Life is full of changes, and we grow up and face reality with all its complexities, which can be challenging. The line "you grow up and then you feel it" further expands on the idea that no matter how prepared one is, life can be unpredictable and difficult.
Line by Line Meaning
The leaves fell off as I did,
I feel like I lost a part of myself when the leaves fell off the tree just like how I feel like I've lost something due to my current situation
I guess it held some kind of meaning.
Perhaps the falling leaves symbolize the end of a season, and in the same way, I'm experiencing an end and subsequent change in my life
I've been lying in this bed of nails,
I've been enduring pain for a long time, and even though it's uncomfortable, it's become familiar
That let the wind out of my sails.
This pain has sapped my energy and motivation
She left me on the bridge she's burning;
Someone I cared about left me when they caused trouble or conflict
Hell, maybe I deserve it.
It's possible that I contributed something to the situation, but I'm not sure what exactly
I'm just trying to find my purpose,
I'm trying to figure out what my role is in life, what I should be doing, and what makes me happy
I hope that it's all worth it
I'm not sure what the future holds, but I'm hopeful that my search for purpose will lead to something meaningful
There will come a time,
At some point in your life,
When you will face your life,
You will have to confront the realities of your existence
Don't let it twist and tear you up inside
Don't let the hardships and challenges of life destroy you emotionally
The world's a fucked up place,
The world is full of sadness, injustice, and unfairness
but it depends on how you see it
However, how you view the world can impact how you feel about it, and what you do with that feeling
Life is full of change,
Life is characterized by constant transformations and shifts
you grow up and then you feel it
As you mature, you start to recognize and understand these changes more deeply
But smooth seas don't make good sailors,
If life was easy all the time, you wouldn't develop the resilience and strength needed to cope with its challenges
Jump ship and head for failure,
If you always avoid challenges, you'll never learn and grow, and will eventually experience failure
Find yourself a tragedy,
Sometimes, it takes a significant loss or hardship to teach you important lessons about life
Slowly lose your sanity
Unfortunately, these lessons often come at a cost, and can cause considerable stress and pain
I've been walking round in circles,
I feel like I'm not making any progress or that I'm stuck in a rut
cursed every corner of this town,
I feel like I've exhausted all the options available to me and am growing frustrated
Will I make it out?
I'm unsure if I'll be able to overcome my current situation and move on
If I do then it's a godsend
If I'm able to overcome these struggles, it will feel like a miracle or a blessing
I caught a bullet in-between my teeth
I've had to endure a lot of pain and hardship, and it's left its mark on me
Could this finally be the end?
I'm unsure if there's a light at the end of the tunnel or if my struggles will ever come to an end

The future of pop punk is in great hands between Neck Deep, State Champs, Knuckle Puck, and Story So Far. The Drop C tuning sounds great for this genre. I caught New Found Glory and Yellowcard on their tour together for the millionth time this fall and love how they still draw the crowds they do same as the late 90s. It's also great to hear some activity from Set Your Goals again. Hopefully they can come out of hibernation.
