My Town
Buck-O-Nine Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Aaaahh yea..

I got the tunes in my pocket
In an old ass walkman
Walk to the beach with a bottle of black and tan
Keys in the velcro where it always should be
Time's tickin by but it doesn't concern me
I'm killin time with nothin to do yea
It's all I seem to think about or do
My soul is sound when I'm in my hometown yea
and no place I'd rather be

(chorus)
My town, my street
gives me piece of mind that can't be beat yea
My town, my street
gives me piece of mind that can't be beat
gives me piece of mind that can't be beat

Well I can sleep all night to the sound of the ocean
Wake up in the mornin and I do it all again
7 days a week I pay no attention
I spend a lot of time with my record collection
I'm killin time with nothin to do yea
It's all I seem to think about or do
my soul is sound when I'm in my hometown yea
and no place I'd rather be

(chorus)

I hear the sound of a skateboard rollin down my backstreet
Raggae music comin from the neighbor across from me
As time ticks by, as time ticks by
I never stop to ask and never wonder why
As time ticks by, as time ticks by
I never stop to ask and never wonder why
My soul is sound when I'm in my hometown yea
No place I'd rather be

(chorus)x2

Yea...

Overall Meaning

In Buck-O-Nine's song 'My Town', the singer describes the beauty of his hometown and his contentedness with living there. He begins by talking about carrying his music around with him in an old Walkman as he walks to the beach with a bottle of black and tan. The singer is taking his time and not concerned about the clock as he has nothing to do but kill time, and his soul is sound when he's in his hometown. The chorus repeats the idea that his town and his street give him a peace of mind that can't be beat. The singer goes on to talk about how he can sleep all night to the sound of the ocean and wake up to do it all over again. He spends a lot of time with his record collection and never stops to wonder why time ticks by. He ends with repeating that his soul is sound in his hometown, and he wouldn't want to be anywhere else.

The lyrics in 'My Town' seem to be celebrating the comfort and simplicity of small-town life. Its tone is one of contentedness, and the singer finds joy in the simple things around him- music, the sound of the ocean, and his neighbors. The song also portrays a sense of taking things slowly - the singer is taking his time and not worried about clocking up too much else on his to-do list, which resonates well with the idea of rural living.

I'm glad that ska blew up for 5 minutes when I was growing up in the 90s. At least it was REAL music. I can't believe I still remember every word to this song!

jazzie huell

this isn't actual "ska", it does have some influence thou. look up ska's origins.

@jazzie huell we just used to call ska-punk/3rdWave "ska" for short. It's certainly a miles apart from the original ska music coming out of the carribean, but it's not that hard to make the connection if you listen to 2Tone/2ndWave & consider it the link. I was & still am a big fan of some of the ska-punk bands of the era. Although one thing that really stands out to me now in my late 30's about the entire late 90's music scene is how kinda... ignorantly blissful so much of it was. After the grunge movement & the gangster rap explosion of the mid-90's, it seems like there was this huge push to sell "happier" music. There are certainly exceptions like the early emo scene(promise ring, sunny day real estate, jimmy eat world, american football, etc.), Rage & Radiohead obviously had some monumental achievements - but that's not what i hear in my mind when i think of late 90's music. i hear this bouncy, innocent, carefree, practically naive sound. It was the era of 3rd wave ska, the swing revival, the lounge revival(if you're unfamiliar, think Smash Mouth), girl groups, & boy bands. Even punk rock wasn't "punk" anymore. Now it was "pop-punk" so there were less songs about revolt/social unrest & more songs about fart jokes, wanting to date cheerleaders, & how daddy won't let me borrow the mercedes on prom night. But boy did things change after 9/11. After that, you would've thought there'd be some great grunge/punk/hiphop/alternative movement. But instead we got nu-metal, butt rock, & american idol. so i guess when u look at the 2000's, the late 90's music scene was actually ok.

I've been humming this for years because i forgot the lyrics and the title, but today i remember the chorus "My town! My street!" And quickly searched it!

My uncle is blasting this and it got stuck in my head. I think it's year 2010.

Damn. I can now sleep in peace.

As someone who lived during the era, this song captured the SoCal new ska movement perfectly. ❤

As a sax player, I want ska music to come back into mainstream.

+KaBlamBandicoot64 Just wait until the hipsters get a hold of it. But they'll ruin it. I'm hoping for swing to come back, and it is, as "electro-swing", which is pretty cool.
