if i were free
Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

If I were free
I would run into battles with flowers and hugs
And bow at the boots of our well-oiled thugs
Yes, if I were free

If it were me
I would yell out "I love you!" to all I passed
I would disrobe and disco and rip off my mask

Yes, if I were free I'd be the 'U' that crossed the 'i' to simply 'b'
Minding our reflections at the bottom of the sea
What did you see?

I saw that you and I forever have been free
The light became too heavy and I fell into a dream
What did you dream?

I dreamed a wind that would sweep
Every castle made of sand
Out across the old far holy land
Oh, if this were free

If this were free
We'd be free of the terror of the graves
And fear masquerading as the brave
Oh, if this were free

I woke upon a pig of red, white and blue
The circus got too heavy so we fell into the zoo
What did you feel?

I felt the fear that every queer does in his head
First thing to starting over, I made sure I was dead
What did you dream?

Swimming with ancients, laughing, tired of getting lost
We took our left, remember, when we leaned upon the cross
What did you see?

I saw that you and I forever have been free
The light became too heavy and we fell into a dream

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "If I Were Free" by Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros convey a desire for freedom, not just from physical constraints, but also from societal norms and expectations. The singer imagines running into battles armed not with weapons, but with flowers and hugs, a peaceful approach that contradicts the violent ways of "well-oiled thugs". He also expresses a desire to express love openly and to shed the masks that we wear in society, represented by the act of disrobing and disco-ing.

The chorus of the song emphasizes a different kind of freedom, represented by the letter 'U' crossing the 'I' to simply 'b', a play on words that suggest that being oneself is the ultimate form of liberation. It also refers to "minding our reflections at the bottom of the sea", which could symbolize introspection and self-discovery. The singer apparently shares this vision with someone else, who reveals that they have always been free but have been weighed down by the light of society's expectations. The second verse reinforces this theme of societal oppression, with the singer wishing that freedom would mean being free from "the terror of the graves" and "fear masquerading as the brave".

The final section of the song is more surreal and abstract, with the singer waking up on a "pig of red, white and blue" and feeling the fear that "every queer does in his head". The dream imagery continues, with swimming with ancients and leaning on a cross representing a search for deeper meaning and connection. The song ends with the revelation that the quest for freedom is ongoing and requires us to confront our deepest fears and desires.

These big top shows were inspiring. A moment so bright and so beautiful that it made sense that it couldn't last that long. Like a summer love, you remember for the rest of your life.

I wonder why no one's talking about the lyrics and it's meaning?

Agreed

we were there that day for the first showing....what an amazing show.  I think watching my daughter's reaction to the whole circus was completely worth the price of admission.  Even after almost a year we still talk about it.  This band is amazing!

Love this... everything about this is great! Love the outfits. My great grandpa's family were a traveling show family ;) Instruments, acting... I just wish I had more pictures from then and this makes me think of them :) Thanks Edward Sharpe and the Magnetic Zeros!
