The Heart From Your Hate
Trivium Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

What will it take
What will it take
To rip the heart from your hate

It's easy to be right when everything repeats
It's easier to cut us down and point at our defeat
It's easy to be right when everything repeats
Dig below the surface find your insecurities
Tell me
Maybe you were right, maybe I was wrong
But I've been silent for far too long
Maybe you were right, maybe I should go
But I've been silent for far too long

What will it take
To rip the heart from your hate
What will it take
What will it take
To rip the heart from your hate (hate)
To rip the heart from your hate (hate)
To rip the heart from your hate

You always walk away
Soon you'll have to face it
Your distance from reality won't bury or erase it
I tried to do the same
Living so complacent
But the problems wouldn't go away so I turned around to face them, tell me

Maybe you were right, maybe I was wrong
But I've been silent for far too long
Maybe you were right, maybe I should go
But I've been silent for far too long

What will it take to rip the heart from your hate
What will it take, what will it take
To rip the heart from your hate (hate)

Maybe you were right, maybe I was wrong
But I've been silent for far too long

What will it take
To rip the heart from your hate
What will it take
What will it take
To rip the heart from your hate

What will it take
To rip the heart from your hate
What will it take
What will it take
To rip the heart from your hate (hate)

To rip the heart from your hate (hate)
To rip the heart from your hate (hate)

Overall Meaning

In "The Heart From Your Hate", Trivium explores the idea of overcoming hatred and intolerance. The lines "What will it take, what will it take, to rip the heart from your hate" is a powerful message that asks what actions are needed to eradicate anger and prejudice from our hearts.

The song also discusses the notion that it's easier to criticize and condemn others instead of examining our own flaws. The lines "It's easy to be right when everything repeats" and "Dig below the surface find your insecurities" confront the idea that we often project our own insecurities onto others, fueling our hateful behaviors.

Trivium urges us to face our problems head-on and not turn a blind eye to the hatred and intolerance we may see around us. Whether it's standing up to bullies or confronting our own biases, the song challenges us to take action and make a change towards a more accepting and tolerant world.

I've followed Trivium for years, since Ascendancy.

In High School I actually wrote a column for my school newspaper and actually got a hold of Matt for it, to just talk about Trivium's direction, (this was right after they dropped Travis Smith, their first drummer), and had brought in Nick Augusto (still one of my favorite trivium members), and I asked a lot of questions, about Augusto, the band.

I closed with this question: "Where do you see Trivium in 15 years?"

Matt K. Heafy replied to me:

"Making the music we want to make."

It's now been almost 10 years since I published that article. Needless to say, Matt has stuck pretty true to that. He's developed as an artist. Music is first and foremost an expression of feeling and emotion. Matt has never sold out. He has never given into the mainstream media fully. He has always made the music he and the band want to make, and he has never settled for less.

Yes, Shogun was amazing. Yes, Ascendancy was stellar. Yes we all loved Ember, and yes, nothing has been the same.

But I think that's part of the maturing process for Matt and the band. And we either support him as an artist, in return for creating music that has given us what we wanted. Or we ditch Matt in the dirt and find someone else who is less mature than Matt.

I for one, will stand by Matt, because he and the members of Trivium, have given me 10+ years of awesome metal. I may not like every song, but I didn't like the entire crusade album either. But I am a Trivium fan. And I always will be. And that means standing by the decisions the bands make.
