Sleep Well Tonight
Gene Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

It's the end of the year
I have just settled here
It may not be much, but it's enough
Yet trouble has sprung from the plubs and the clubs
We'll see blood soon, when the night's through

Still you can have it all, there's a hole in the wall
Get some money, and we'll show them
This is our territory, this patch belongs to me
Why don't they understand, but I've got a plan
So take my hand

And sleep well tonight
Tomorrow we'll fight, would you like it in town?
As the bass drums boom by
We'll leave this lay-by, this excuse for a town
Now that everybody knows all about me
I've been rumbled, I've been sold
Born with plenty but you're left empty

You can have it all, there's a hole in the wall
Get some dough out, and we'll show out
But still trouble comes from these pubs and these clubs
Why can't they understand, but I've got a plan
So take my hand
And sleep well tonight

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Gene's song Sleep Well Tonight capture the emotions of a youth from a small town trying to make a name for himself in the big city. The singer has just moved there and is happy with what he has achieved so far. However, there is a risk that all of that could be taken away due to the dangers that lurk in the local pubs and clubs. Despite the risk, the singer is determined to make his mark and prove his worth. He asks a friend to join him in his plan and reassures him that everything will be alright. The line, "Take my hand and sleep well tonight" is a promise that they will succeed.

The second verse suggests that the singer is running away from something. It appears that he had a troubled past and is trying to escape it by moving to the city. However, he is still haunted by his past and can't escape it. He feels like he has been exposed and that everyone knows about him. It is unclear what he has been exposed for, but the line "Born with plenty but you're left empty" suggests that he has had some kind of privileged upbringing but is still unfulfilled. The song ends on a hopeful note, with the singer again reassuring his friend that everything will be alright as they head out to take over the city.

Olympian is one of those rare albums where every track on it is great. Not many of those albums around. They came out swinging with an abundance of heart and hooks wrapped in an easy to swallow Smith shaped pill. Good medicine indeed.

Too good to be truly appreciated.

Same here. I was getting melancholy for a lazy summer day in the mid 90s, out on the Sacramento river, listening to alternative, with your best girl at the time.

@mariel9180

Me too just had to Google it 😂

@chrisedwards3883

I've been singing this to myself nearly everyday for 20 years now.
