The Rat
Dead Confederate Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
And take good aim
Make sure I'm dead
Bang Bang
'Cause I'm a rat
There's no mistake
Under the bed
Where you sleep
Crush the skull
And make me tame
Sweep it up
Hide it away
No morals shown
In no way explained
Stupid human
Shit for brains
And draw tiny pictures in all the dead leaves
Bag and burn, bang, bang
Throw your judgments across the breeze
Bag and burn, bang, bang
You live inside your Jesus dream
Bag and burn, bang, bang
Bang Bang
Get some sleep
Or lie and wait
Until the day
I burn away
Forget the corpse
Present the case
To bring me down
And lose your word
I'll follow you
Into the grave
And at the gates
I see the passing say
"The judge be judged,
and all the wretched be saved."
I throw my curse
All across your days
And draw tiny pictures in all the dead leaves
Bag and burn, bang, bang
Throw your judgments across the breeze
Bag and burn, bang, bang
You live inside your Jesus dream
Bag and burn, bang, bang
Bang Bang
And draw tiny pictures in all the dead leaves
Throw your judgments across the breeze
Watch them float off to never be seen
And live inside your Jesus dream
The lyrics to Dead Confederate's song "The Rat" can be interpreted in various ways, but one interpretation could be that the song is about the cycle of violence and revenge. The first verse describes someone being shot, presumably by someone they know, and the chorus emphasizes the victim's status as a "rat," someone who has betrayed or done wrong to others. The second verse talks about disposing of the victim's body and erasing the evidence, possibly suggesting a cover-up or a desire to avoid consequences. The following lines, "No morals shown/In no way explained/Stupid human/Shit for brains," could be interpreted as commentary on the viciousness of humanity and the lack of justification for the violence.
The next section of the song talks about drawing "tiny pictures in all the dead leaves" and throwing judgments "across the breeze," possibly symbolizing a desire to let go of anger and judgment and to move on from the violence. However, the chorus repeats the theme of living "inside your Jesus dream," suggesting that even though the desire for revenge may fade, there is still a deep-seated importance placed on beliefs and values, religious or otherwise.
As a whole, the lyrics of "The Rat" provide a haunting commentary on the destructiveness of violence, the complexity of human emotions, and the ways in which people seek to make sense of and deal with trauma.

They deserved more recognition.

Wrong place and time; I really think that's most of it. "Wrecking Ball" was still moderately successful, but if it that album had been released in 1994, it would have been pushed by a major label, and DC would have absolutely blown up. "Start me Laughing" is basically "Smells Like Teen Spirit, Part II."
I think "Sugar" was a bit of a misstep from a popularity standpoint, but I think they would have survived it. It would probably even be revered today as showing artistic integrity.

yup. This was a killer album that stands the rest of time.
@Maziedivision
It was impossible. Most bands are a product of their historical present . Dead Confederate had a certain 90s grunge nostalgia combined with a hard rock sound that didn’t reflect the rock of the early 2010s . They deserved the recognition, but they didn’t get it because they didn’t conform with the time.
