I Want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper
Erika Eigen Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I want to marry a lighthouse keeper
And keep him company.
I want to marry a lighthouse keeper
And live by the side of the sea.
I'll polish his lamp by the light of day,
So ships at night can find their way.
I want to marry a lighthouse keeper,
Won't that be okay?

We'll take walks along the moonlit bay,
Maybe find a treasure, too.
I'd love living in a lighthouse:
How about you?

I dream of living in a lighthouse, baby,
Every single day.
I dream of living in a lighthouse,
A white one by the bay.
So if you want to make my dreams come true,
Go be a lighthouse keeper, do!
We could live in a lighthouse,
A white one by the bay-ay-hay.

Won't that be okay?
Ya-da ta-da-da.

Overall Meaning

The song "I Want to Marry a Lighthouse Keeper" by Erika Eigen is a whimsical and romantic ballad about an unusual desire to marry a lighthouse keeper and live by the sea. The lyrics reveal the singer's deep longing for a simple life, away from the hustle and bustle of society. She yearns to be a companion to the lighthouse keeper, to polish his lamps so ships can find their way, and take walks along the moonlit bay. She imagines living in a white lighthouse by the bay, finding treasure and living a peaceful life. The song has an upbeat and catchy melody that perfectly captures the carefree and idyllic nature of the singer's dream.

The lyrics can be interpreted in different ways, but one possible explanation is that the singer is seeking a partner who possesses qualities of a lighthouse keeper – reliable, steadfast, and dependable. The lighthouse keeper holds an important responsibility of guiding ships safely to shore, and perhaps the singer sees this as a metaphor for a trustworthy and loving partner. The sentiment of the song is innocent, pure and almost childlike, which adds to its charm and appeal.

@AllytheGumby

the way this was used in the film is honestly genius

@gunnarrundblad6846

I've been whistling / humming this one for about forty years now. Wish I could stop.

@sdovas

Well the process involves dosing you with some mysterious medication, strapping you to a chair, clipping your eyelids open...

@theconservative1967

Perhaps if you marry a lighthouse keeper, it might help.😂😂😂

@AllytheGumby

dont stop.

@tommy1gtr

Love this song! A great tribute to all those jazzy novelty songs of the 20s and 30s!

@MisterGutsy420

I feel like the sound of this was waaaaaaay ahead of its time. Crazy.

@titanuranus3095

Particularly the beat

@drewg4323

I mean...not really. If anything I'd say this was the pinnacle of the sound that existed for the 30 years prior...these sorts of little jingles were all the rage for quite some time, sadly they've mostly been lost to time, but this was more akin to the meta of that sound before it died off almost completely, mostly being relegated to commercials.

@MisterGutsy420

@drewg4323  Yeah, the vocals and melody sound accurate to the period but the way the drum beat sounds makes it seem ahead of its time. It sounds like it could've been a remix of a classic jingle in a way that wasn't done (at least widely enough to be mainstream) in the late 60's/early 70's.
