The book version of Aragorn's arrival, where we genuinely believe all hope is lost until the standard of the King breaks on the lead ship, was so much better.

One good thing about the theatrical version is that when the trio jumped off the ships upon arriving, it gave the audience the feeling of "How did they get hold of the ships?" Also, with the theatrical version cutting Aragorn's meeting with the ghost army at "What say you?," it left the question open as to whether they would answer his call.

Not only Peter Jackson made his cameo here but several other production crews also made their cameos. The bosun was played by Richard Leslie, the head of Weta and the screaming harpooner was played by Weta Prosthetic Supervisor, Gino Acevedo. There are several others that I forgot. In BTS clip they mentioned that this was the last chance for the crew to make a cameo.

Its really chilling how they describe these events in the book. Umbar fleet was 50 ships in total plus dozens small vessels and they had great numbers and Legolas told how they laughed at them and were ready to slaughter them but once Aragorn ordered the Ghost army to appear and attack, the fear got hold of the Umbar pirates and it turned total chaos! Legolas wasnt sure did the ghost blade hurt them as if they needed them cause their appearance on the battlefield made the enemy abandon all their ships, many of them drowned and rest run to the hills after that Aragorn released them to their eternal rest.

I love both movie and books! those who have not read the books! i seriously suggest you!

@HammockerSam Mind you in the books, the ghost army cant hurt anyone. They are just that, ghosts. Taking out the pirate fleet relieved the coastal gaurd of Gondor to come. So instead of a ghost army they just got more gondorians :l I never read the books, but im pretty sure its something along those lines

@HammockerSam Gondor was, as far as I remember, much larger than one might think from the movies, with how they only focused on Minas Tirith and the surrounding area. The men of south Gondor were the ones who took the ships with Aragorn up to the Pellenor fields- the fact that they were able to turn the tide of the battle there shows their numbers and strength. It's similar to how the movies replaced Erkenbrand's army with Eomer's at the battle of Helm's Deep. In any case, both book and movie scenes were epic in their own way.

Blocking the king of the dead’s sword in the perspective of a visual medium, like film, could just imply that he’s blocking it because he has Anduril now.

When Aragorn brings the oath breakers to Minas Tirith instead of men from along the river as in the book I think Peter Jackson actually improved on the story. It’s one of the few times I agree with altering from the original story. Other places where he did this I’m not so happy about. Peter Jackson leaving out the scouring of the shire I didn’t like at all. He really messed up with that. I also wasn’t happy about him replacing Glorfindels roles with Arwen. As for Tolkien, I wish that he would have given us more of a story about the blue wizards and the background of the ring wraiths.

A shame that Aragorn didn't arrange for them to kill all the orcs in Mordor then they get freed from their service and curse. Although that would have made the story way shorter.

This was the role of the AoD in the book; at this point Aragorn released them and then he and his friends and family boarded and sailed on to Gondor. This was way cool; the "green scrubbing bubble" attack on Pellanor Fields wasn't.

He released them because they had no use. They couldn't kill they just scared the shit out of the Corsairs that they drowned themselves at Pelargir.
And the corsairs arrived late because they were raiding small towns along the coast and looting them when they should have sailed straight for Minas Tirith. Pelargir being well defended held them longer than the others so when Aragorn arrived he had a small force with him and those dead guys.

I don't think I've ever even seen the theatrical version of Return of the King. I know I saw the first two movies in theaters when they came out, and that is the last time I saw ANY of the theatrical versions. The Extended Editions are just so much better in every possible way.
