Waterfront Dance Club
Funeral for a Friend Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Scarred open wounds
The needle, it dances and glows through the skin
Under lights that burn so bright
'Round the roads we see at night

The light has faded through the windows
The light has faded through the windows

Destroy to destroy landscapes
People you know, people you don't
Wards of empty patients
Just to sleep away the days

The light has faded through the windows
The light has faded through the windows

Last call on the waterfront
As the kids all stare into thin air
Last call on the waterfront
As the kids all stare into thin air

You wait for your breath to come
Your breath to come
Your breath to come
Your breath to come

The fantasy of reality
Goes rushing through your head
Just a symphony of a restless dream
Down to your fingertips

Last call on the waterfront
As the kids all stare into thin air
Last call on the waterfront
As the kids all stare into thin air

You wait for your breath to come

Overall Meaning

Waterfront Dance Club by Funeral for a Friend is a haunting song that delves into the darkness of drug addiction and the loneliness that comes with it. The opening lyrics, "Scarred open wounds, the needle, it dances and glows through the skin" paint a visceral picture of drug use. The references to "lights that burn so bright" and "the light has faded through the windows" create a sense of disorientation and confusion, as if the singer is lost in a hazy drug-induced state. The lines "destroy to destroy landscapes, people you know, people you don't, wards of empty patients, just to sleep away the days" speak to the destructive cycle of drug addiction and the toll it takes on not only the user but those around them.

The song takes a turn in the chorus with the repeated refrain of "last call on the waterfront as the kids all stare into thin air." This line speaks to the isolation and hopelessness that often comes with addiction. The final lines of the song, "you wait for your breath to come, your breath to come" further emphasize the feeling of suffocation and desperation that come with addiction. The chorus is repeated throughout the song, creating a haunting and almost dizzying effect.

Overall, Waterfront Dance Club is a powerful song that shines a light on the dark realities of addiction. It paints a visceral picture of the physical and emotional toll addiction takes on those who struggle with it and those around them.

Hope they play this as an encore to Hours, it seems fitting with the tour name and would just have a great atmosphere.

I think I have to agree. Personally, I like TALES better as an album. but from an objective standpoint, this album is def peak FFAF. Matthew's best vocal performance by far. so sad how he destroyed his voice a few years later.
