Against All Odds
[Chase And Status] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I was raised in a city with no heart,
Where there's no car,
Steppin' when it comes to be gettin' that dough fast,
I'm a hustler, I'm a, I'm a hustler
Raised on the battle field,
Born as a sufferer,
Before i had a deal i was still stackin' deals,
Get punked sell food to the costomers,
Now i get love crews in the back o' the S Class,
Dem cant move like dat Y'na,
(I was raised in)

I come from where man were done for hardly nothin'
You can see it in the blues that I'm hardly frontin'
Got kids with guns in the heart of London,
Bullet proof vests ?

There's no acters and actress' barley around here,

This matches them straps of Manchesters,
Soon as you exit Stanstead you might see

Overall Meaning

some road rage,
You gotta keep your wits about you at every single stage,

In these lyrics of "Against All Odds" by Chase and Status, the artist talks about the struggles and hardships he faced when growing up in a city without a heart, where there are no cars and one has to resort to hustling to make ends meet. The artist reminisces about his tough upbringing on the battlefields, where he was born as a sufferer, but he persisted and stacked deals even before he got a record deal. He sold food to customers and now gets love crews in the back of the S Class. He then repeats the phrase "I was raised in" to emphasize the influence his tumultuous environment had on him.

The artist then goes on to paint a vivid picture of the harsh realities of life in his city, where people are done for hardly anything, as evidenced by the Blues - a form of music that often deals with themes of sorrow and hardship - and where kids carry guns in the heart of London. He refers to bulletproof vests, which are the only form of protection against this harsh reality. The artist also mentions how there are no actors and actresses around, but instead, there are people armed with straps - a slang term for guns. He ends by warning us that even when we leave the city, we must remain vigilant as danger can still lurk at every turn.

How can I just let you walk away?
Just let you leave without a trace
When I stand here taking every breath, with you, ooh
You're the only one who really knew me at all
How can you just walk away from me?
When all I can do is watch you leave
'Cos we've shared the laughter and the pain and even shared the tears
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now, oh there's just an empty space
And there's nothin' left here to remind me
Just the memory of your face
Ooh, take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space
And you coming back to me is against the odds
And that's what I've got to face
Instrumental
I wish, I could just make you turn around
Turn around and see me cry
There's so much I need to say to you so many reasons why
You're the only one who really knew me at all
So take a look at me now, well there's just an empty space
And there's nothin' left here to remind me, just the memory of your face
Now take a look at me now, 'cos there's just an empty space
But to wait for you, is all I can do and that's what I've got to face
Take a good look at me now, 'cos I'll still be standin' here
And you coming back to me is against all odds
It's the chance I've gotta take
Instrumental
Take a look at me now

I'm a 52 year old man, I close my eyes, and this 80s classic takes me back to a
better time.... my teenage years. Memories I will treasure forever.

You and me too brother. Like high school dances and holding your sweetie close and feeling like the whole world wasn't nuts like it seems now. Maybe we were just naive back then, idk.

Sad to hear your latter years aren´´t as good as earlier ones.

I'm the same age as you. Such amazing memories of the 80s and the people from back then.
I'm lucky that I'm still in touch with most of the people that I had important relationships with. However my wife, who I didn't meet until 2000 is the best thing that ever happened to me.
