Devil in the Bottle
[unknown] Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
Yes I am, baby
I wear skimpy clothing
It's very tight
I work all hours of the night
Waiting for someone
To pay me
I don't even wear clean underwear
My pimp doesn't care
(pimp doesn't care)
I'm a hoooee...
My pimp says "Work, bitch!"
hooooeee...
But my heart is saying no
If you wanna freak with me.
Baby there's a price to pay
I'm a hooker on the corner
Look at my teeth decay
If you wanna be with me
Baby you have got to see
You can get a case of shingles
And a bad STD.
I'm a hooker on the corner, baby
My pimp says I'm fat and lazy
I'm a hooker on the corner baby
Come, come,
Come on and pick me up
The lyrics of [unknown]'s song "Devil in the Bottle" paint a stark and raw portrayal of a woman who has found herself in deep despair, working as a prostitute on the corner. The opening lines of the song, where she declares "I'm a hoooeee..." and acknowledges her line of work, signify a sense of resignation and acceptance of her situation. This admission is further emphasized by her repeated assertion of "Yes I am, baby", indicating a sense of defiance and owning of her circumstances.
The lyrics delve into the grim realities that this woman faces in her day-to-day life as a sex worker. She describes wearing skimpy clothing that is very tight, and working all hours of the night, highlighting the physical and emotional toll of her job. The mention of not even wearing clean underwear and her pimp's indifference to her well-being further emphasizes the exploitative nature of her situation. The repetition of the phrase "pimp doesn't care" serves as a sobering reminder of the lack of care and respect she receives in her line of work.
The woman's internal conflict and feelings of inner turmoil are also touched upon in the lyrics. While her pimp commands her to work with a callous "Work, bitch!", she reveals a sense of reluctance and conflicting emotions, as her heart is saying no. This juxtaposition between the external demands placed on her and her internal desires and conflicts adds a layer of complexity to her character, shedding light on the internal struggles she faces in her life as a sex worker.
The chorus of the song further delves into the harsh realities of life on the streets as she bluntly warns potential clients of the risks and consequences of engaging with her. The imagery of her teeth decaying, the mention of shingles, and the allusion to contracting an STD serve as stark reminders of the dangers and health risks that come with her profession. The repetition of the phrase "I'm a hooker on the corner, baby" and the mentioning of her pimp's derogatory remarks about her being fat and lazy serve as poignant reflections of the dehumanizing and degrading treatment she endures, inviting the listener to examine the societal and systemic issues that contribute to her plight.

I come home late at night with my shoes in my hands
Stumble in the back door being quite as I can
And I know she there in bed cold and all alone
And she's crying cause I'm breaking up our home
And she knows (and she knows) the hell I'm going through
In this world (in this world) inside my head
There's a devil (there's a devil) in a bottle
And he wants to see me dead
I fall into her arms and she helps me with my clothes
Yeah she stays on with me cause she really knows
Cause I'm trying lord to find my freedom
By escaping to the only freedom I've ever known
And she knows (and she knows) the hell I'm going through
In this world (in this world) inside my head
There's a devil (there's a devil) in a bottle
And he wants to see me dead
There's a devil (there's a devil) in a bottle (in the bottle)
And he wants (and he wants) to see me dead
And it's killing her to see me die this way

This is pure country music, not like the garbage that passes for country music nowadays.

By escaping to the only freedom I’ve ever known. I knew this song and that line for decades. Understood it very well. 40 years of self destruction to self treat anxiety.
But now I’m past the 3rd month on the other side. I’ve found freedom and it’s glorious !
Good luck out there

This song reminds me of my husband and I…I lost him in 2016 but this song always gives me chills…we were married 37 1/2 years…many times he had a date with the devil

Do to have a date with him
@Melinda8162
Too much alcohol has done that to many. My ex and a younger nephew.

My condolences, madam.

I can so relate to this song. Alcoholism cost me two marriages and a myriad of problems. I can never touch another drop because of liver problems. T.G. Sheppard is speaking to people like me when he sings this beautiful song.
