"Do you see what I see?
Way up in the sky, little lamb,
Do you see what I see?
A star, a star, dancing in the night
With a tail as big as a kite,
With a tail as big as a kite."
Said the little lamb to the shepherd boy,
"Do you hear what I hear?
Ringing through the sky, shepherd boy,
Do you hear what I hear?
A song, a song high above the trees
With a voice as big as the the sea,
With a voice as big as the the sea."
Said the shepherd boy to the mighty king,
"Do you know what I know?
In your palace warm, mighty king,
Do you know what I know?
A Child, a Child shivers in the cold--
Let us bring him silver and gold,
Let us bring him silver and gold."
Said the king to the people everywhere,
"Listen to what I say!
Pray for peace, people, everywhere,
Listen to what I say!
The Child, the Child sleeping in the night
He will bring us goodness and light,
He will bring us goodness and light."
The song "Do You Hear What I Hear?" is a powerful, poetic dialogue between different characters, beginning with the night wind and the little lamb. The night wind points out a star in the sky with a tail as big as a kite, and asks the lamb if it sees it as well. The lamb agrees and proceeds to ask the shepherd boy if he hears the song that is ringing through the sky. The shepherd boy hears it and describes it as having a voice as big as the sea. Finally, the shepherd boy tells the mighty king that there is a child shivering in the cold and suggests bringing him silver and gold.
The king, in turn, urges the people to pray for peace and to listen to what he has to say. He believes that the child sleeping in the night will bring goodness and light. This song is often interpreted as a celebration of the birth of Jesus Christ, with the star representing the star of Bethlehem, the child representing Jesus, and the message of peace and goodwill signifying the essence of Christmas.

I like the story in this song, which recalls the Child Jesus born on Christmas Day, where Night Wind, Shepherd Boy, Little Lamb, A Mighty King declares the Glory of God to People everywhere as far as human senses, insights and wisdom could reach, acknowledging the Prince of Peace has finally Come this Day to bring us Goodness and Light !
