Hear What I Hear
[unknown] Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Yeah lately there's not much to say
Kinda crazy how we look the other way
Yeah maybe there's a better way
Same channel on a different day

I can't hear you through all this hate
Build a wall up so you can't escape
Yeah maybe now its all for show
Change channels it just comes and it goes
Yeah maybe tell me all your lies
Yeah someday cut you down to size

I can't hear you through all this hate
Build a wall up so you can't escape
Its going down

Now's the time to give it up
Its getting clearer
Its so hard to swallow

I can't hear you through all this hate

Build a wall up so you can't escape
I can't hear you

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of [unknown]'s song "Do You Hear What I Hear" seem to convey a feeling of disillusionment and frustration with the state of the world. The opening lines suggest a lack of communication or understanding, where people are choosing to ignore or avoid important issues. The repetition of "Same channel on a different day" implies that despite the passage of time, nothing seems to change or improve, and the problems persist.

The mention of "all this hate" indicates a divisive and polarized environment, where people are unable to listen to each other or find common ground. The line "Build a wall up so you can't escape" could be metaphorical, symbolizing the barriers we construct to protect ourselves emotionally and intellectually. It reflects the idea of shutting oneself off from differing perspectives and avoiding uncomfortable truths.

As the song progresses, there is a suggestion of disillusionment with the superficiality of it all. The lines "Maybe now it's all for show" and "Change channels it just comes and it goes" hint at a sense of emptiness in the face of constant media exposure and the fleeting nature of attention given to important issues. The desire for truth is expressed in the line "Tell me all your lies" and the anticipation of eventual accountability in "Someday cut you down to size."

Overall, the lyrics of "Do You Hear What I Hear" reflect a dissatisfaction with the current state of affairs, urging listeners to pay attention, break down walls of ignorance, and seek genuine connection and understanding.

This was my lullaby when I was a baby. I absolutely refused to go to sleep without hearing my mother sing it to me. People always say that people with beautiful voices have the voices of angels well my mother was definitely an angel. She sung for our church's choir and selflessly gave to others without any thought of reward. I miss her and can't wait to see her again when I finally return home to heaven.

@irishcookie30 I do not fucking care. Like I said before this song had a different meaning for me when I was little. The fact that I now know what the song is really about doesn't change the fact that it helps me remember my late mother.

irishcookie30

You know this song is about a drug addict

Beautiful rendition. The story behind the song adds even more context. This was written during the Cuban Missile Crisis, at a moment when humanity came frighteningly close to obliterating each other in nuclear fire. The song was inspired by the sight of women walking their babies in strollers across the city during this moment of extreme fear. The combined emotional symbolism of innocent babes in the backdrop of possible nuclear war and the plea of peace is a beautiful synthesis with the good news of the birth of Jesus Christ.
