The lyrics to this traditional lullaby, Hush Little Baby, are a mother's promise to her child that she will provide for their needs and wants. The song starts with the mother instructing the baby not to utter a word, after which she promises to buy them a singing mockingbird. If the mockingbird fails to sing, she promises to buy the child a diamond ring. If that diamond turns brass, she will buy the child a looking glass, and if that glass gets broken, a billy goat will replace it.
The promise to buy the billy goat is intriguing as it may seem an odd choice for a child's present. However, goats have various uses, and in the past, they were used for their milk, meat, and fiber. According to the lyrics, if the billy goat will not pull, a cart and bull will replace it. This line could mean that the billy goat was initially intended to be used for pulling a cart, so if it would not, a cart and bull combination would take its place. Regardless, the mother promises to provide for her child and obtain him a dog named Rover if the goat does not satisfy him. Lastly, if that dog fails to bark, the mother will buy her child a horse and cart. This promise shows the extent to which the mother is willing to go to keep her child happy and content.

To cheer you up, your mother will get you a loyal and playful dog as a companion.

Your mother wants to make you happy and will get you a majestic horse and cart to ride in.

If the horse and cart stop working.
