We Three Kings
[unknown] Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
We three kings of orient are, bearing gifts we traverse afar
Field and fountain, moor and mountain, following yonder star.
Cho: Oh, star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright.
Westward leading, still proceeding,
Guide with thy perfect light.
(Melchior) Born a King on Bethlehem's plain,
Gold I bring to crown him again
King for ever, ceasing never over us all to reign. .....
(Casper) Frankincense to offer have I, incense owns a Deity nigh
Pray'are and praising, all men raising,
Worship him, God most high, oh.....
(Balthazar) Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume breathes a life of
gathering gloom.
Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying, sealed in the stone cold tomb.
(all Glorious now behold him arise, king and God and sacrifice
Alleluia, alleluia, heaven to earth replies. ....

"We Three Kings" is a classic Christmas carol that tells the story of the three wise men who traveled to Bethlehem to pay homage to the newborn Jesus. The opening lines of the song introduce Melchior, Casper, and Balthazar, also known as the Magi from the Orient. They are on a journey to offer their gifts to the Christ child, guided by a bright star. The second verse describes the gifts that each wise man brings: Melchior offers gold, symbolizing Jesus' royalty; Casper brings frankincense, representing His divinity; and Balthazar presents myrrh, foreshadowing Jesus' suffering and death on the cross.
The chorus of the song celebrates the star that led the wise men to Jesus, calling it a "star of wonder, star of night, star with royal beauty bright." It also asks the star to continue guiding them on their journey, saying, "westward leading, still proceeding, guide with thy perfect light." The final verse of the song glorifies Jesus as both a king and a sacrifice, and ends with the alleluia of heaven to earth.

I love how the verse about myrrh becomes almost like a funeral march. It just hits so different.

the best rendition of this verse I've ever heard: the tone of Balthazar's voice and the somber way the music is played genuinely makes the words come alive...the sacrifice the Lord Jesus was destined to make for each of us.

The three verses evoke so well each of the gifts. The first one is a sort of triumphant regal march (gold). The second one is almost like a temple choir (incense). And the third is like a funeral (myrrh)

I once read through and studied this one, and it's more an Easter song in the last two verses.
