Pick up the Goddamn phone
I pay to hear you lie
I saw you on T.V.
There's nothing here for me

I'll pay the price
So pick up the Goddamn phone
I'm just a voice you cannot see
But you act as if you know me

You chat away while I bleed
Then take my money

Overall Meaning

The song "Ballad" by Ministry is a heavy rock song that explores the theme of loneliness and desperation. In the opening lines, the singer demands that the person on the other end of the phone pick up the phone and lie to them, indicating that they are willing to pay for the comfort of a false connection. The singer has seen the other person on TV, suggesting that they may be a celebrity or public figure with whom the singer feels a connection despite never actually meeting them.

The chorus emphasizes that the singer is willing to pay the price, both financially and emotionally, for the other person's attention. They feel unseen and unheard, but desperate for connection. The lyrics suggest that the other person does not truly know the singer, but pretends to in order to take their money. The song speaks to the dark side of loneliness and the lengths that people will go to feel a sense of connection, even if it is entirely fabricated.

If this what love is (yeah)
If this what love is
Then I don't want it
I don't want it
I'll ignore it
You adore it
Wastin' time
I can't afford it
What's more important?
You sure are gorgeous
Worried 'bout your ex
Worried 'bout your ex
You should be worried 'bout what's next
(Yo Pi'erre, you wanna come out here?)
Worried 'bout your ex
Worryin' got you stressed (hey)
Hurry, don't get left (hey)
You overthink a lot (ay)
My feelings you forgot (ay)
You forgot all the time (yeah)
(Yo Pi'erre, you wanna come out here?)
Pullin' up to your spot (yeah)
That's like an hour drive (huh)
I come to you a lot (hey)
I'm fuckin' you a lot (wait)
I'm lovin' you a lot (skrrt, skrrt)

I don't wanna stop
Lookin' at my watch
How much time I got? (wait)
Sex is on the clock (skrrt, skrrt)
Grab the Magnum box (ay)
Hit her from the side
She said that's her spot (wait)
(Yo Pi'erre, you wanna come out here?)
Hit her in my condo
She might send the drop (wait)
I can't trust these thots (wait)
Flyin' out a lot (wait)
Sellin' box and top
If this what love is (yeah)

Idk I didn’t like it near as much as the other songs, I think it had potential but the fact that it had no bass kinda ruins it for me

yall need to pay attention to what he did here, not using an 808. the lowend of a song, of any genre, is the thing that gives it weight. lots of bass = heavy feeling. less bass = light feeling. its an important composition tool that most rap artists and producers are afraid to use because lowend is so integral to hip hop, but magical things can happen when you get rid of it entirely.

in rock tradition, the drums and bass were what signaled to the rest of the group where the song was going. what chord change goes here, what transition goes there. so when you take the bass away, in lots of peoples minds, the song hasnt properly started yet. the rest of the instruments are just waiting to be clued in as to where to go. this can create mystery in the composition. 'where is this going?' whats gonna happen?' etc

so sometimes bands would leave the bass out entirely. go look up the song 'tiger trap' by beat happening. its all these dreamy guitars and really subdued drumming and singing thats offkey, and kinda sounds sleepy. you can hear a great song coming, youre just waiting for the bass to kick in and then the song will get going. but it never does. you just spend 6 minutes floating in the air while this really loose song plays, and its really light on your brain and very pleasant and it feels like a dream

i guess the point is that playing around with beats that use minimal or even no 808s can create magical moments like what pierre did here, creating all this suspense and intrigue inbetween be mine and routine
