Àsgeir Lyrics

Heart-Shaped Box
She eyes me like a pisces when I am weak
I′ve been locked inside your Heart-Shaped box for weeks
I've been drawn into your magnet tar pit trap
I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn back (Alt: ... when you turn black)

Hey! Wait!
I′ve got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait! (Alt: Hate! Haight!)
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Your advice

Meat-eating orchids forgive no one just yet
Cut myself on angel′s hair and baby′s breath
Broken hymen of your highness I'm left black
Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back

Hey! Wait!
I′ve got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait!
I've got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice
Hey! Wait!
I′ve got a new complaint
Forever in debt to your priceless advice

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Heart-Shaped Box" by Àsgeir are full of metaphors and imagery that can be interpreted in a variety of ways. At first glance, the song seems to be about a relationship that is consuming and overwhelming. The singer is trapped in a "heart-shaped box" and cannot escape the hold of the other person. The metaphor of being a "pisces" suggests vulnerability and a tendency to be easily swayed. The reference to a "magnet tar pit trap" implies that the singer is stuck, unable to break free, and perhaps even sinking deeper.

The line "I wish I could eat your cancer when you turn back" is particularly striking. It could refer to a desire to take on the other person's pain or to be able to heal them, but it could also suggest a darker intention, as eating cancer would be taking the disease into oneself. The second half of the song includes more metaphors, such as "meat-eating orchids" that "forgive no one," potentially alluding to the idea of nature being unforgiving and brutal. The line "cut myself on angel's hair and baby's breath" could be interpreted as both delicate and dangerous, as the softness of the imagery contrasts with the sharpness of the words.

Overall, "Heart-Shaped Box" is a complex and layered song that invites interpretation and analysis. The lyrics suggest a relationship that is both intense and suffocating, with the singer feeling indebted to and consumed by the other person's influence.

Throw down your umbilical noose so I can climb right back
The line suggests that the other person has a metaphorical umbilical cord that they can use to control the artist, like a noose around their neck. The artist longs to return to this person despite the harm they may have caused

I almost had the same experience, at Slottsfjell, I was volunteering as a guard, and while talking to a small group of people, I heard this song in the background and immediately ran over, watching the entire song in pure awe. Took me ages to find this song on spotify, as I had no idea who the artist was, but I'm so glad that I did, it was a truly amazing experience.

Hah goosebumps is an understatement. I almost got tears in my eyes over this the first time I heard it.

Asgeir has changed a frustrated grunge song into a despairing ethereal love tune; works well like this and is a sublime interpretation in my opinion (Y)
