Rose Garden
ÂêµÙÄÈ¡¤Âó¿Ë²¼À³µÂMartina Mcbride Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime
When you take you gotta give so live and let live and let go oh oh oh oh
I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden

I could promise you things like big diamond rings
But you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover
So you better think it over
Well, if sweet talking you could make it come true
I would give you the world right now on a silver platter
But what would it matter
So smile for a while and let's be jolly love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime
I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden

I could sing you a tune and promise you the moon
But if that's what it takes to hold you I'd just as soon let you go
But there's one thing I want you to know
You'd better look before you leap still waters run deep
And there won't always be someone there to pull you out
And you know what I'm talking about
So smile for a while and let's be jolly love shouldn't be so melancholy
Come along and share the good times while we can

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime

I beg your pardon I never promised you a rose garden
Along with the sunshine there's gotta be a little rain sometime

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of Martina Mcbride's song 'Rose Garden' speak about the complexities of love and relationships. The song's title is a metaphor for the idea of a perfect relationship, with roses representing the beautiful parts and the garden representing the entirety of the relationship. The line "I never promised you a rose garden" serves as a reminder that relationships are not always perfect and that they require both sunshine and rain. The singer acknowledges that there will be tough times ahead, but emphasizes that they should not overshadow the happiness of the good times.

The second verse emphasizes that material possessions do not define a relationship, saying "I could promise you things like big diamond rings, but you don't find roses growin' on stalks of clover." The singer understands that instead of making grand promises, it is more important to be realistic about what one can offer in a relationship. The chorus is a repetition of the line "I never promised you a rose garden," making it clear that the singer is not going to pretend or promise a perfect relationship, but instead, they will focus on sharing the good times together and embracing both the beautiful and challenging aspects of their relationship.

Overall, 'Rose Garden' is a reminder that relationships are not easy, but they are worth it if both parties are committed to working through the hardships together, appreciating the moments of happiness, and embracing both the beautiful and challenging aspects.

This was my daughters favorite song. She was only 2 when the song was released but she knew the words and could sing along with it. She passed away in July 2020 but this brings her back to me whenever I hear it.
