One More Try

And people on the streets
I'm looking out for angels
Just trying to find some peace
Now I think it's time
That you let me know
So if you love me
Say you love me
'Cause teacher
There are things that I don't want to learn
And the last one I had
Made me cry
So I don't want to learn to
Hold you, touch you
Think that you're mine
Because it ain't no joy
For an uptown boy
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
When you were just a stranger
And I was at your feet
I didn't feel the danger
Now I feel the heat
That look in your eyes
Telling me no
So you think that you love me
Know that you need me
I wrote the song, I know it's wrong
Just let me go
And teacher
There are things
That I don't want to learn
Oh the last one I had
Made me cry
So I don't want to learn to
Hold you, touch you
Think that you're mine
Because it ain't no joy
For an uptown boy
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
So when you say that you need me
That you'll never leave me
I know you're wrong, you're not that strong
Let me go
And teacher
There are things
That I still have to learn
But the one thing I have is my pride
Oh so I don't want to learn
Hold you, touch you
Think that you're mine
Because there ain't no joy
For an uptown boy
Who just isn't willing to try
I'm so cold
Inside
Maybe just one more try
In "One More Try," George Michael seems to be at a crossroads in a romantic relationship. The song has a lamenting tone as he desires to find peace by looking out for angels. He is questioning whether the love in the relationship is reciprocated with lines such as "So if you love me, say you love me. But if you don't, just let me go." He reminisces about how the relationship was once carefree but has now become fraught with danger, as he feels the heat in the look from his lover's eyes.
In the chorus, Michael shifts his attention to the metaphorical "teacher." He doesn't want to learn how to hold onto someone who doesn't want to be held or touch someone who doesn't want to be touched. He speaks of the pain he felt in the last relationship he had and doesn't want to go through it again. The song ends with a touching plea for one more try. Although the words suggest that Michael is ready to give up, the way he sings the song carries the emotion of wanting to hold on to the relationship.

Just trying to find some peace
I want to find a sense of calm and tranquility in my life
Now I think it's time
I've come to realize that it's time
That you let me know
I need you to communicate with me
So if you love me
If you truly have feelings for me
Say you love me
Express your love for me
But if you don't just let me go
If you don't feel the same, please tell me and let me go
'Cause teacher
The reason for my hesitation is that
There are things that I don't want to learn
I don't want to experience certain things
And the last one I had
My past experience with love
Made me cry
Was so painful that it brought me to tears
So I don't want to learn to
I don't want to experience
Hold you, touch you
The physical aspects of a relationship
Think that you're mine
The idea of feeling possessive of you
Because it ain't no joy
Because it doesn't bring me any happiness
For an uptown boy
For someone who is used to a certain lifestyle
Whose teacher has told him goodbye, goodbye, goodbye
Whose past experience with love has resulted in heartbreak
When you were just a stranger
When I didn't know you
And I was at your feet
When I was completely taken by you
I didn't feel the danger
I was naive and couldn't see how dangerous the situation was
Now I feel the heat
Now I can feel the intensity of the situation
That look in your eyes
The way you're looking at me
Telling me no
Is a sign that you're not interested
So you think that you love me
Despite this, you still claim to love me
Know that you need me
And believe that you can't live without me
I wrote the song, I know it's wrong
Even though I expressed my feelings in this song, I know it's not right
Just let me go
Please let me move on from this situation
So when you say that you need me
When you claim that you can't live without me
That you'll never leave me
And assure me that you'll always be there for me
I know you're wrong, you're not that strong
I know deep down your feelings aren't as strong as you claim
Let me go
Please allow me to leave this situation
And teacher
And even though I've been hurt before
There are things that I still have to learn
I know there's still more for me to experience and learn in life
But the one thing I have is my pride
The one thing that I hold onto is my pride and self-worth
Oh so I don't want to learn
That's why I don't want to experience
Hold you, touch you
The physical aspects of a relationship
Think that you're mine
The possessive nature of a relationship
Because there ain't no joy
Because it doesn't bring me any happiness
For an uptown boy
For someone accustomed to a certain lifestyle
Who just isn't willing to try
Who isn't ready to take a chance on love again
I'm so cold
I feel emotionally numb
Inside
Internally
Maybe just one more try
Perhaps there's just one more chance for me to find love

I too used to listen to certain music during my "black hole" years. Ultimately psychotherapy and later medication pulled me back to the life I had left. Now, age 77, all's well. So don't ever give up; there is help - you just have to ask for it.
