Free Fallin'
Ô¼º²Ã·¶ûJohn Mayer Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

She's a good girl, loves her mama
Loves Jesus and America too
Shes a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too

It's a long day living in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy 'cause I don't even miss her
I'm a bad boy for breakin' her heart

[Chorus]
And I'm free, free fallin' fallin'
And I'm free, free fallin' fallin'

All the vampires walkin' through the valley
They move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls go home with broken hearts

[Chorus]

Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin',

I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I wanna free fall out into nothin'
Oh I'm gonna leave this, this world for a while

[Chorus]

Now I'm free, free fallin', fallin'
Now I'm free, free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'

Free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'

Overall Meaning

The song "Free Fallin'" by John Mayer is actually a cover of the original version by Tom Petty. The lyrics depict the story of a girl who loves her family, her religion, Elvis, horses, and her boyfriend. It is said that the girl is a symbol of the typical American values and lifestyle. The starting lines introduce her and her likes, however, the focus quickly shifts to the difficulties the singer himself has been facing. He talks about living in Reseda, a place where a freeway runs through the yard, and moving on from the girl he has hurt in the past. The chorus "And I'm free, free fallin'" represents the sense of liberation that he feels after finally letting go of his past, and finally being free to live his life without any regrets.

In the second verse, the singer talks about the valley where he lives, full of vampires and bad boys lurking in the shadows, and how the good girls always end up broken-hearted. The repetition of the chorus emphasizes the feeling of freedom that he has, and the guitar solo represents his journey of falling freely into nothingness, ready to leave the world behind. The final "now I'm free fallin', fallin'" suggests that despite the song's initial sadness and regret, the singer is now content with the way his life is, no longer weighed down by the past.

Just missing Tom today. And every day.

This has to be one of the best albums in Rock history. It's perfect.

I moved across the country only to have my apartment fall through on arrival. Me and my dog had to shack up with a stranger for 6 months.

When I got my place I cranked my Stereo (no neighbors) and danced to Apartment Song with my dog. That was a long time ago, but Tom was there.

Full Moon Fever is my favorite Petty album. Probably because it was my first Tom Petty cassette and I played that fucker till it disintegrated and bought another.

Wildflowers is my next favorite, even before the re-release launched it all the way to whatever gig Tom's playing now.

Tom, I love you more than my clumsy words can say. I miss you so damn bad.

This was my little brother’s favorite song. He died in 1994, at 7 yrs old. I visit this song to remember him, and use it as the music to my mental montage of his life
