Canon
И. Пахельбель Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Souviens-toi

Ensemble, ensemble, ensemble, ensemble
Ensemble, ensemble, ensemble, ensemble
Ensemble, ensemble, ensemble, ensemble
Ensemble, ensemble, ensemble, ensemble

Ensemble, ensemble, ensemble, ensemble
Ensemble, ensemble, ensemble, ensemble
Ensemble, ensemble, ensemble, ensemble
Ensemble, ensemble, ensemble, ensemble

Je ne me souviens que d'un mur immense
Mais nous étions ensemble
Ensemble, nous l'avons franchi

Souviens toi, ensemble, nous l'avons franchis
Souviens toi, ensemble, nous l'avons franchis

Overall Meaning

The lyrics are in French and translate to:

Remember
Was it May or November
Here or there?
Was it a Monday?
I only remember an immense wall
But we were together
Together, we crossed it

Come back to me
From your travels so far
Come back to me
Everything adds to my life
I need our paths to cross
When time brings us together
Together, everything is prettier

The repetition of "ensemble" (together) emphasizes the importance of unity and companionship in life's journey, as together they were able to overcome the "immense wall." The lyricist reflects on a past memory, not able to recall the specifics of the situation, but the presence of their company being the most important aspect. The need for their paths to cross again highlights the desire for continued connections with those we care about.

Remember until about 100 years ago anyone who listened to this song probably only heard it once in their life, attending an orchestra talented enough to perform this would’ve been expensive and rare, and we take fro granted we can listen to it anytime.

@jeannebouwman1970

This is not really a difficult piece, a lot of string quartets can play this

@lehlongwane

Damn, Rhys! You've just made me appreciate it even more. Thanks (I guess)😌
