Khil's musical career began in 1955 when he attended the Leningrad Conservatory; five years later, he graduated. During his studies, he began performing various lead operatic roles, including Figaro in The Marriage of Figaro. Post-graduating, he became enamored with pop music after witnessing a performance by K.I. Schulzenko.
Several awards and decorations were bestowed upon Khil: in 1968, he was granted the title of Meritorious Artist of the Russian Federation, and in 1974 he was the People's Artist of the Russian Federation. In 2009, he was given the Order of Merit for the Fatherland, 4th class. Furthermore, he participated in and won the Russian and International Variety Performers Contests.
More recently, Khil became the subject of an internet meme, owing to a performance of the song "Я очень рад, ведь я, наконец, возвращаюсь домой" ("I Am Very Glad, Because I'm Finally Returning Back Home" uploaded onto YouTube in 2009. The video performance dated back to 1966, and Khil's catchy and quirky performance quickly caught the eye of the internet at large, to which the song became known as "Trololo" due to the particular vocalization utilized in the song; by extent, Khil himself became known as "Mr. Trololo." When made aware of his new-found success, Khil responded with an invitation to write lyrics for the previously exclusively-vocalized song.

The lyrics of the song "Если ты со свидания вернулся" by Эдуард Хиль depict a story of resilience and optimism in the face of rejection and disappointment. The opening lines describe a scenario where the singer returns from a date where he was rejected, feeling dejected and aged beyond his years. The imagery of dark clouds gathering and a sense of inner darkness symbolize the heaviness and despair that the singer feels in that moment. The physical and emotional fatigue is palpable as the singer's hands droop and legs weaken, indicating a sense of defeat and hopelessness.
However, the chorus shifts the tone towards encouragement and hope. The lyrics advise the singer not to lament his fate but instead to open up to the possibilities ahead. The metaphor of opening windows to the dawn suggests a fresh start and embracing new beginnings. The call to wander the world freely with a light step, facing challenges head-on and leaving sorrows behind, speaks to the idea of moving forward with optimism and courage. It conveys a message of self-reliance and determination to overcome obstacles.
The following verses evoke a sense of returning to nature and finding solace in its simplicity and beauty. Sleeping under an open sky, feeling the gentle rustle of grass, smelling freshly baked bread, and observing the earth's cycles all symbolize a connection to the earth and a rejuvenation of the spirit. The return to the hometown is portrayed as a homecoming filled with warmth and familiarity, where the singer is anticipated with a smile by someone special, hinting at a sense of belonging and acceptance.
The repetition of the final lines reinforces the theme of finding joy and comfort in coming back to one's roots and being welcomed with love. The imagery of smiling upon reuniting with a loved one after a journey suggests a sense of reconciliation and happiness. Overall, the song conveys a message of resilience, acceptance, and finding beauty and joy in life despite setbacks, emphasizing the importance of staying positive and moving forward with hope and gratitude.
