Bitches Brew
††† Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The wolves come to see the end
They hide from view and wait
To watch the ghost inside you come awake
And when the shots go off
You'll hear them call
My heart is racing just to see it all
To take out your breath and watch it come awake
From the flames of the fire
I feel you crawl into my bed
Throwing shapes at the sky,
I watch you climb into me
With your knees open
On display you taunt the beast again
'Cause when you move and shake
That thing inside you comes awake
As you dance against the breathing walls
My claws are out I want to feel it all
Feel it crawl inside you changing shape
Take out your breath and feel you come awake
From the flames of the fire,
I feel you crawl into my bed
Throwing shapes at the sky,
I watch you climb into me
Say something, pray for something
Say something, pray or something
Say something, pray for something
Say something, pray or something
Say something, pray or something
From the flames of the fire,
I feel you crawl into my bed
Throwing shapes at the sky,
I watch you climb into me
SAY SOMETHING! PRAY OR SOMETHING!
SAY SOMETHING! PRAY FOR SOMETHING!

In this song, †††, also known as Crosses, describes an eerie scene where the rising of the full moon brings out a pack of wolves who await the awakening of a ghost inside someone. The lyrics hint at a transformation occurring within the individual, as they change shape and taunt the beast within. The imagery of flames and crawling creates a dark and unsettling tone, leaving the listener to wonder what exactly is happening to the person in question. As the song builds towards the end, the singer's desire to feel and experience the awakening becomes more apparent, almost as if they want to be a part of the transformation themselves. The repeated mantra of "Say something, pray for something" adds to the unsettling atmosphere of the song, as if the singer is desperate for a response from the entity within.
There is a lot of room for interpretation in these lyrics, and the unusual syntax and repetition make it even more cryptic. The use of the moon and wolves often symbolizes transformation and change, which could be what is happening to the person being described. The flames could represent passion or destruction, further contributing to the sense of chaos within the song. The repeated refrain of "throwing shapes at the sky" also adds to the sense of uncontrollable movement and change, as if the person is no longer in control of their body.

Hey Gabrieli, who said you should be able to hear Jazz in this record? And what is Jazz? Or Jass, as it was named at its early stages? I would suggest that this record, like any other record, is just music.
Breaking from jazz? Maybe.
Miles hated to be called a Jazz musician, btw. Probably because he felt he was just a musician, trying to write and play music that reflected his time.
In the 1970s, music played an important role in the life of many young women and men who were trying to break free from beliefs and values that no longer represented them.
Miles didn't just adapt his music trying to fit into rock, but fueled that drive for generational change with power and artistic elegance, incessantly evolving from there until he died in the 1990s. That's why Miles' contribution to Western music and culture is so huge.
Miles was no Uncle Tom and will always be regarded as a symbol of constant, untamed evolution, among other things.

Recorded in August 1969, more than 50 years ago, and released on March 30, 1970, "Bitches Brew" was both revolutionary AND evolutionary.
In his autobiography, Miles Davis said, "It was like one of them old-time jam sessions we used to have at Minton's back in the old bepop days."
The recording session was all about improvisation and that is what makes jazz so fabulous and interesting. And keeps us listening.
Finally, it is noteworthy that in 1971 "Bitches Brew" won the Grammy Award for Best Large Ensemble Album.
