Sunday
●Hurts Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

There are times when we question the things we know?
Never thought that the cracks will begin to show
We both know love is not that easy
I wish I'd known that it would be this hard to be alone.
Please, come home!

Loveless nights, they seem so long
I know that I'll hold you someday.
But till you come back where you belong
It's just another lonely Sunday.

Is this the end of the love that had just began?
I always hope that the best it was yet to come.
Please, come back, don't you leave me
We both so young, I know you need me too.
And there'll always be times like these.

Loveless nights, they seem so long
I know that I'll hold you someday.
But till you come back where you belong
It's just another lonely Sunday.

Maybe we'll see that we were wrong
If ever we look back one day
But till you come back where you'll belong
It's just another lonely Sunday.

Lonely, lonely.

If you don't come back tomorrow
I'll be left here in the cold
If you don't come back tomorrow, I'll go

Loveless nights, they seem so long
I know that I'll hold you someday.
But till you come back where you belong
It's just another lonely Sunday.

Maybe we'll see that we were wrong
If ever we look back one day
But till you come back where you'll belong
It's just another lonely Sunday.
Lonely, lonely.

Lonely Sunday

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Sunday" by Hurts express the feeling of loneliness and heartache that one experiences when their partner is away. It speaks to the negative aspects of love, where the singer never anticipated the difficulties that come with it. The opening lines suggest that even when we are sure of what we know, there are times when we question them. In the same way, love that once felt unbreakable can start to show cracks. The chorus "Loveless nights, they seem so long, I know that I'll hold you someday. But till you come back where you belong, it's just another lonely Sunday" shows the pattern of the singer's life without their lover, where every day is difficult and they can't wait for their return.

The singer gradually begins to question if the love they had just begun is now coming to an end. They don't want their partner to leave and hope they will return because they are both so young, and they need each other. However, there is a sense of ambivalence: "Maybe we'll see that we were wrong If ever we look back one day But till you come back where you belong It's just another lonely Sunday." The singer remembers the past with fondness, and still holds out hope for the future, but in the present, their life feels incomplete without their partner. The outro ends with the repetition of the word lonely, giving a final resonance to the feeling of isolation.

Lyrics anyone?

Leave me in chains
Strip me of shame
Caress me with pain
Cause I'm down on my knees an I'm begging you please as you say
Don't cry mercy
There's too much pain to come
Don't cry mercy
M e r c y
Full me with rage
And bleed me dry
An feed me your hate
In the echoing silence I shiver each time that you say
Don't cry mercy
There's too much pain to come
Don't cry mercy
M e r c y
M e r c y

M e r c y
M e r c y
M e r c y
M E R C Y

Don't cry mercy
There's too much pain to come
Don't cry mercy
M e r c y
M e r c y

You're welcome lol

One of the greatest songs of the past decade, especially for those '80's children out there. This song is so right on every level. Hurts has many smashing songs that touch upon these same aural sensibilities, but "Mercy" is the violent culmination of their entire creative energy up until this point in their songwriting career. Fans of Depeche Mode, Alphaville, Ultravox, Bronski Beat, etc. will immediately recognize the forward passion in this tune. Is it their most beautiful song? No. Is it their most accomplished song? No. But there is an edginess, a raw razor blade swirling to this which will make it stick with you much longer than all of their others. "Mercy" is sheer brilliance.
