Mad World
♥ Gary Jules Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places, worn out faces
Bright and early for their daily races
Going nowhere, going nowhere
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression, no expression
Hide my head, I want to drown my sorrow
No tomorrow, no tomorrow

And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very
Mad world, mad world

Children waiting for the day, they feel good
Happy birthday, happy birthday
Made to feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen, sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me, no one knew me
Hello teacher, tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me, look right through me

And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you, I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very
Mad world, mad world

Overall Meaning

"Mad World" is a song written by Roland Orzabal and originally performed by his band Tears for Fears in 1982. Gary Jules later covered the song for the soundtrack of the movie "Donnie Darko" in 2001. The song reflects on the struggles of human existence and is widely considered an anthem for people who feel out of place in society. The opening lines, "All around me are familiar faces, Worn out places, worn out faces," paint a picture of a world that is frozen in time, where people are just going through the motions without any real meaning or purpose.

The second verse continues to depict the feeling of being an outsider in a world full of people who are blindly following societal norms. "Went to school and I was very nervous, No one knew me, no one knew me, Hello teacher, tell me what's my lesson, Look right through me, look right through me." This line illustrates how the singer feels invisible in school, and that he is just another face among many. The chorus is bittersweet because it is a commentary on how people tend to mask their pain and frustration, "And I find it kinda funny, I find it kinda sad, The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had." The song is a haunting reminder that the world can be a cruel place, but that it is possible to overcome these challenges and find meaning in life.
