Tainted Love
♪♫ Marilyn Manson Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Sometimes I feel I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
From the pain that you drive into the heart of me
The love we share
Seems to go nowhere
And I've lost my light
For I toss and turn I can't sleep at night

[Chorus]
Once I ran to you (I ran)
Now I'll run from you
This tainted love you've given
I give you all a boy could give you
Take my tears and that's not nearly all
Oh, tainted love
Tainted love

Now I know I've got to
Run away I've got to
Get away
You don't really want IT any more from me
To make things right
You need someone to hold you tight
And you'll think love is to pray
But I'm sorry I don't pray that way

[Chorus]

Don't touch me please
I cannot stand the way you tease
I love you though you hurt me so
Now I'm going to pack my things and go
Tainted love, tainted love [Repeat x2]

Touch me baby, tainted love [Repeat x2]
Tainted love [Repeat x3]

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Marilyn Manson's cover of Tainted Love transmit a theme of hurt, rejection, and detachment when love is not reciprocated. The song tells the story of someone who is no longer receiving the love they used to, and are now seeking to break free from the relationship. The lyrics “sometimes I feel I’ve got to run away, I’ve got to get away” signify the need to distance oneself from the pain caused and the heartbreak that was given to them. The line “the love we share seems to go nowhere” expresses that the love they shared is not progressing and is becoming stale. The chorus then clearly states that the person has had enough and decides to leave the relationship, despite giving their all to the other person.

The final verse is a powerful statement of self-respect and acceptance of the situation as it is. The person finally acknowledges they need to run away and get away because the other person no longer desires them. Despite the love they feel, it is no longer being reciprocated, and they need to leave the relationship. The line “don't touch me please, I cannot stand the way you tease” portrays the desire for personal space and respect that should be granted by their partner. The song ultimately illustrates the complications of love that can arise when one person cares more than the other, and their desires are no longer being met.

Fun fact this guy was a HUGE in Japan (made Michael Jackson change his tour dates bc his concerts were so packed an extra night was added) he also inspired the wardrobe of many rock japanese bands.

I realized their clothing style looked super similar, I thought it was a general inspiration of the 80s style but not exactly from him 😅
